I just ordered Linehan's skills training workbook

Posted by Deneb on February 8, 2007, at 1:55:11

I just ordered "Skills Training Manual for Treating Borderline Personality Disorder".

Anyone have this book?

Can we work on it together?

Hi Deneb,

I don't have the book but was just reading the reviews on Amazon. It sounds really good. It got some nice write ups from readers. I hope it helps out. Let me know what you think about it once you get started on it. Hope it helps.

Regards,
happykat :)

I'm interested in trying some of the workbook ideas. I might have it--if I don't, I'll get it from the library.

gg and some others here have posted links to DBT pages, and I can also use those. I'd be interested in working along with you.

Let me know when you get the book, and we'll do it together. We can discuss individual chapters and ideas, and then try the exercises.

I'm really happy that you've ordered the book.

We had started a thread on doing DBT together a while back. I'd be interested in trying again, although I think i'd have to jump in sometime in the future when I'm not so overwhelmed by real life. (Isn't that ironic?)

I have it. It's been the most useful "self-help" book I have ever found. Maybe we could have a DBT chat some night if enough people were interested.

I hope you like it. I think the secret is just to jump in and start practicing whatever appeals to you in it.

A DBT chat sounds great. I can't wait to get my book. I'm taking a break from school right now and concentrating all my energy on getting better/improving my life. I need to turn my life around. I need to make life worth living again.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

...and here's a concise summary I keep in my bookmarks. If you Google Marsha Linehan and/or tx for BPD you'll get bunches more, though...:-)

Click on the link on the word "worksheets" for some really specific stuff....

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy-- the approach builds on some of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, and adds a somewhat eastern, meditation aspect, and emphasizes emotional regulation and self-soothing.

Martha Linehan is the originator of the idea, and was primarily using it for people diagnosed with (so-called) Borderline Personality Disorder. She used it in individual therapy, but there are often groups that use it as a stategy.

It's is a useful way to think about all sorts of problems. The Workbook is mostly to help therapists as they run groups. Has a lot of her practical suggestions and exercises.

Unarchived, we could be less constrained.

but what about the skills that are supposed to be written down? what about a history for those to follow as isn't that an important part of learning mindfulness? to be able to see the distortions and challenge them?

if wrong apologies....just another opinion as learning how ppl approach DBT could be so helpful to other posters on this site and the Internet at large.

I was just remembering the concerns the last time we tried this about being honest about things on an archived board.

I think all the written stuff is supposed to personal anyway, and would be kept by those who are doing the work.

Honestly, it's not a huge deal to me. Everything about me is probably on Babble somewhere. I was just thinking about previously expressed concerns.

I've been wanting to give it another try and was going to post about that soon. I think the chat idea is good, though the timing might be a problem for some or even many. I also think that individual exercises can be written down in some way personally, and then what can be shared is the experience of doing the exercises perhaps. I think it can be helpful to talk about how we did with the exercises and how we are or are not able to apply them IRL (or here). I think it's possible to do that without sharing too much, and we can each decide what we do and do not want to share while still having an individual record (a journal or folder or whatever) to refer back to when needed.

What do y'all think?

Mindfulness

Posted by Deneb on February 15, 2007, at 21:09:40

In reply to Re: I got my book » Deneb, posted by Honore on February 15, 2007, at 0:41:46

Here is what I've learned so far:

There are 3 states of mind
1. Reasonable mind
2. Emotion mind
3. Wise mind

There are 3 "what" skills and 3 "how" skills

"What" Skills
1. Observing
2. Describing
3. Participating

"How" Skills
1. Taking a nonjudgmental stance
2. Focusing on one thing in the moment
3. Being effective

Now let's see if I understand this...

Reasonable mind is logical and rational. Emotion mind can be irrational and depends on emotions. Wise mind is the integration of reasonable mind and emotion mind.

There's a practice exercise that has participants go into themselves and experience wise mind.

I don't get it. :-( How do I experience wise mind? What do I think to experience it? I can't do it! What am I supposed to be thinking when I follow my breath? I can't do this!

Wise mind is like intuition. Is it just knowing something? How do I get to that part of myself that just knows? I don't get it. What am I supposed to be thinking? How do I do this? I don't get it!
