This 'system' I'm unfortunately in, does not have CBT.
Is anyone aware of self-help 'book' on CBT?

CBT is a theoretical orientation as well clinical model--I think we could be more helpful if you specified a set of symptoms you wanted to address--OCD, anxiety, depression etc. As far as I know most of the self-help books using CBT are organized in this way--The National OCD Foundation has a great bibliography re CBT for OCD.

Do you have a site as I'm having problems finding a therapist. Mention a med or redirected. I still take valium and luvox but need to learn CBT. Love Phillipa

trouble is it's so boring. Go round supermarket but don't buy anything; go round supermarket and buy one item; go round supermarket and buy all the toilet rolls etc

Since it's been discovered that fear has a fast track from the amygdala to the frontal cortex, it means that thoughts come after feelings at least sometimes. Doesn't this undermine the central dogma of CBT? Fred

Another dogma seems to be that you can't be anxious in a relaxed body. Anyone who has woken with sleep paralysis knows this isn't true. Paralysis is about as relaxed as you can get. Also a pdoc said meditation may not be a good idea for panic disorder people as letting go and relaxing can trigger panic. I sighed gratefully when he said this. At last someone understands!

Sorry I'm late. I've had DBT for anxiety/panic, PTSD, borderline. CBT is a train your thoughts technique, right?
I've just heard that some peeps think DBT is better than CBT.
Can anyone share a CBT skill for coping w/ 'mental unhappiness in many forms' that doesn't involve telling yourself, "IAMSPECIAL" (UGH!), or breathing exercises until hyperventilate, or meditation?
(Yep, see the dogma u speak of FredPotter.)

You know I've been thinkin' this morn' a little about OCD and GAD, and that they may run concomittantly.I've never been labeled OCD, but I do have some of the symptoms.
If I was paralyzed ... I'd panic to high heaven if I couldn't straighten that picture on the wall or make my kitchen sparkling clean or make a phone call before I got an overdue bill, etc.!
Did I ask you if you'd ever had CBT? I'm thinking you have becuz' of the 'dogmas'.
DBT may be a bit better in that you are allowed to feel your anxiety/depression/whatever. It is validated.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
It's form of therapy where, it sounds like more compassion is given the individual, than in CBT. You 're-learn' or 'learn for the first time', how to feel good about yourself, after trauma. It is especially good for peeps w/ borderline personality disorder or hx of suicide attempts. You are allowed to have your feelings and you are validated, but the issues of trauma are not spoken of. Instead, you learn skills to treat your feelings so that you will not act upon them in a bad way. I think it's really good therapy. I wasn't able to finish (can take nearly a year) becuz' I had to move. I don't know if I'd like CBT. Wonder about REM, rapid eye movement. Not sure but think it is a 'distracting from thoughts technique'.

"Stop obsessing" by Foa and someone else and "Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy" by Burns are two good ones.
Good luck!
