Anxiety hint

Anyone heard of this? If you find yourself in the middle of a panic attack, either take a cold shower, which will kill it right away, or start singing out loud. The singing is a trick that supposedly firemen and policemen use--it must have something to do with changing the breathing patterns.

sound too hokey?

The singing actually works, sometimes! Even if you can't sing.

Also will keep you awake longer if you;re falling asleep while driving a car. For some reason. At least has helped me.

I think they got that (the singing) from the Sound of Music-- or some other musical. Maybe the King and I-- I don't know musicals so well.

Or maybe firefighters have always done it, and the musicals got it from them--

A cold shower can probably make you forget anything, as long as you're in it-- if the water is cold enough. Unless you're afraid of being in the shower. Which I am.

Maybe if you're afraid of being in the shower, though-- cold water will drive you out. So the cold water helps fear of being in the shower too-- It definitely gets me out of the shower every time.

You sing with a different part of your brain -- music comes from the same place that math does and you call upon your logic and higher brain functions to put the song together. This is why you don't stutter when singing either.

Cold water shocks the system and resets everything -- think flight or fight or freeze. We use cold water in the face of kids who are breath holding if they persist.

The human body is just plain weird. :)

If singing or a cold shower really works, imagine what singing *IN* a cold shower does!!!

I had NO IDEA that singing was a help for anxiety, but I do that sometimes. To sing way out loud, very loud, it empties me. I think it's brilliant that it's thought of as a sort of "therapy".
