>I watched it long back and I don't think I understood it very well. But it did make me sick and upset. Not a good movie to watch.

strangely, its one of my favorite movies. i'm not really sure why. maybe the fact that the main character was so misunderstood makes me feel like i can relate. on the other hand, the fact that someone was misunderstood to the point of being institutionalized for 18 months, along wiht a bunch of other young ladies who probably didn't need to be there either makes me realise how depressing the medical field really is.
maybe i'm missing the point entirely. but i can see how it could be a very upsetting movie.

I loved that movie, but my family hates it. We watched it to understand what life in institutions was like back when. It was for a play that we were putting on. If you get a chance you should totally read it. It's called "Chamber Music" by Arthur Kopit. It's a play about women in an institution who think they are famous. There's Joan of Arc, Amelia Heirheart... and others.
Muffy, I'm sorry you didn't like the movie. I hop eyou feel better!!

Hi Muffled,
I've seen the film and read the book. What is so disturbing about either one is that Susannah didn't need hospitalization. It was the 60s and her behavior was deemed unacceptable by her parents and so she gets sent to a doctor and without a second opinion, off she goes to the mental hospital. That's what is upsetting to me that she didn't need to be there.

it's a pretty triggering movie. kinda set me off with some SI when i watched a few years ago. i think however i did identify with angelina jolie's character. i liked the defiance and strength in her. and when she did finally get down that's how i feel, defeated.
lots of triggers.
hope you feel better. try to watch another movie, something fun to take your mind off "last watched movie".b2c.

In reply to Thx guys, least maybe I not so weird after all. (nm), posted by muffled on December 11, 2005, at 15:06:18
You aren't so weird :-)
I have to be in the right space to watch it...
But I guess it is one of my favourite movies...
Not because it is particularly good...
More becasue I identify with the main character so much.I spent two years more inside than out...
And it was the same in a lot of respects...
Fairly much the same...
And the other people
It reminds me of all the friends I made in there and how they were wonderful friends to me and helped me immensely even though they were a little odd I guess. She signed herself in...
Remember?
They wanted her to sign the forms and she said
'Shouldn't my parents be doing this they are the ones who want me in here?'
and they said
'You are 18 honey it is your decision'
And she signed the forms.
I was volountary too.
Though... If you say you want to go home then sometimes they say they will section you under the mental health act if you try and leave...
I guess I just identify.
Not knowing what is wrong
Feeling normal mostly
But othertimes something is wrong and you don't know what it is
And then her friend...
What happened to her.Yeah I have to be in the right space...
Brings back a lot of memories...

> Brings back a lot of memories...***Thanks Alex, good to see your post. Only getting a bit better today. Yeah, when I was 'in' I escaped!!!And the cops were hunting me!!!And there was a girl who was absolutely convinced that they'd switched her head with that of her 'twin', other than that she was nice to talk to. Food was good. Next time they put me in the secure ward so no escapee. But an extrodinarily kind male nurse who made me feel human....(NOT sex, just pure human kindness when I needed it most).
This is the end of the thread.
