I'm proud of you Rain, really proud. That first call is a really big step, if he wasn't right that's okay, you'll find someone who is.

that was helpful to read. I think CBT is best suited to me but Im not positive. (No, actually retail therapy is;-)) CBTs the shortest therapy I think. But I dont know if that is right for this situation. My negative experiences with therapists is part of the reason this is so difficult. I have a list of names to start. I think I will play eenie meenie miny mo with it. I have to make another call tomorrow!

do they do it per session, in advance or can you pay late? or does it depend? is it unusual to pay ahead for sessions?
thanks

Generally you pay at the end of every session.
If you have insurance, you may just need to pay the co-pay at the end of the session. Depends on who submits the insurance claim (you or the therapist) and how your particular therapist does it.
My experience is that they generally do NOT bill after the fact. You are expected to pay that day.
Handing the check (which I made out in the waiting room before the appointment) to my therapist at the end of the session gives me a way to say thankyou, and to even things up a bit (because they have just spent the whole session on your issues, it feels better to give something back to them).

Hi Rainbow -
I do think it varies with each T as Falls said. Both my T and my daughter's T give me a statement at the end of each month. But I do the paperwork for the insurance, i.e. I pay the full amount to both therapist and get my portion back from the insurance company.
Finding the right therapist for you will be the bigger job. I would tell the therapist you are interviewing your past experience, both the good, bad and ugly.
Good Luck, once you find the right one, it will be well worth the journey!

For me, there's a bill lying near the head of the couch on the last day of the month! I mail in the payment to him, and get reimbursed by insurance myself (not a lot-25 visits per year). I would find it strange to end a session by paying him right then, as often the moments of leaving bring forth strong and poignant feelings from my younger parts, which he and I both want them to express, even though I may be going out the door physically as they do!

I imagine the reason for that is probably in case you turn out to be a no show. If they are keeping that time slot free for you they want to make sure you pay them for it.
Have you checked out what you can get from insurance / your uni services. Big universities tend to have better services...

I havent checked what their availability is though. Oh, maybe I should just go there. I had just wanted to keep all that out of school.

It sounds like it would be strange, I think I like the once a month idea.

you do have all the usual confidentiality stuff.
but it is also true that people you know from uni could see you coming and going from there.

I pay my pdoc before each session, and then they file it with my insurance. After I met my deductible, then I start getting reimbursement checks back. But she requires the payment up front all the time.
It's a cash flow thing as much as anything. And it saves on bill collecting expenses.

I give my T. a check covering my co-pay at the end of each session. He does all the insurance filing for the rest of his fee.I'm used to the little ritual, and in some ways, it helps me. It's a few minutes to chat and to bring myself further out of "therapy mode" if things have been intense. More time to dry the tears and breathe. I think it also helps remind me of the reality that this is his job, and I do have to leave, on those days where I want to stay there and curl up on his couch.
I have a lot of those days :-(

Thanks :-), Im not so worried about meeting I kinda dont mind that its the way I feel when Im there. I dont like that - vulnerable. Dont like vulnerable :-| But you need to be sometimes. Right?

>its the way I feel when Im there. I dont like that - vulnerable. Dont like vulnerable :-| But you need to be sometimes. Right?
yeah thats right. you need to feel vulnerable sometimes. if you feel vulnerable then i guess that might be because you are talking about something that is really hard and when you are doing that... well... you have to do that to make proper progress really. if you didn't feel vulnerable then i guess you would just be having a social chit chat which is all very well but it wouldn't be helping you deal with the stuff that is hard.
that being said...
trust can take a little time
and usually the first session is kept pretty light
before you go...
you might want to have a think about why you are going.
whats up?
what are the issues that are sending you to therapy?
what is it that you are wanting to have a little help with?those are pretty much guaranteed to come up and so it can be helpful to have thought a little about them before hand. it doesn't have to be a whole heap of stuff and you can change your mind later.

Good! I'm anticipating a very interesting time for you. I think you've been wanting to do this for a while...
Remember, too, weird, uncomfortable, funny, strange...it's all pretty much expected that first time. Along with nice stuff, too, of course :-)
I think...the better Ts sometimes can alleviate some of that. But there's bound to be some awkwardness. Like Alex said, though, it should be fairly light the first time.
You're BOTH sizing each other up for a very important potential relationship.
Let us know every single detail...'kay?
