Ice Cream - THE solution (trigger)

Posted by fallsfall on December 20, 2004, at 8:51:13

I have recommended ice cream since I started posting on this board. I have even been named "The Ice Cream Queen".

I just want to give a testimonial today - Ice Cream REALLY does help.

Last Friday I saw my therapist. We are talking about very hard stuff, but I didn't realize quite how hard it was until I was driving home. I have a suicide plan (and have for almost 2 years), but there is one piece of the plan that would take me a couple of days to accomplish. This is a good thing because it means that I can't be impulsive with this plan. I would need to do something 2 or 3 or more days in advance in order to be able to do my plan - and then maintain the decision to act for that time. This has been an important safety feature. But on Friday, this particular thing just happened to be happening (3 or 4 times a year, I do this thing). And as I was driving home I realized that this safety catch was off. I hadn't realized how important this catch was, but as soon as I realized that it wasn't an obstacle I started thinking about whether there was any *other* reason not to act. I haven't felt this suicidal in a long time (almost 2 years), and it was scary to me.

I stopped on the way home (with tears on my face) and bought my favorite ice cream - I was out of ice cream at home. I dried my tears as best I could, but I didn't let the fact that I looked like XXXX keep me out of the store. When I got home it was so frozen I couldn't get it out of the container, but I did manage to scrape two spoonfuls into a bowl. I ate those and then got more from the container on the counter. I did this maybe 4 times until the ice cream was soft enough to get enough into the bowl to satisfy me.

It was like magic. I swear that as I put the first spoonfuls into my mouth that my body started to calm down. I had decided on the way home that I would eat ice cream rather than act, and eating ice cream allowed me to maintain that decision.

I called my therapist, and he called back 2 hours later - by then I could tell him why I was so upset, and that I believed that I would be OK. I didn't tell him that it was the ice cream that made the difference. I will tell him today.

Saturday was bearable, but on Sunday I woke up and just wanted the day to evaporate. It was early, and I forced myself to go back to sleep. When I did get up, mid-morning, I decided that I could eat ice cream for breakfast. I did, and it helped me again.

There was another time years ago when I was so depressed that I literally couldn't get out of bed. The only thing that got me out of bed was ice cream.

Don't underestimate the power of ice cream.

(And please, please, please, have one piece of your plan (if you must have a plan) that takes some effort, to prevent impulsively acting on your plan)

Falls,

What's your favorite flavor? Mine is Java Chip by Starbucks. Then comes Ben and Jerry's New York Super Fudge Chunk.

Did it have chocolate?

Did this ice cream have chocolate in it? Isn't that a natural antidepressant? I am really curious about what flavor it was.

Ben & Jerry's New York Super Fudge Chunk ice cream is what I go for when I really need serious ice cream intervention.

I am glad it helped, whatever flavor it was.

I'm concerned that your safety feature against impulsivity is gone. Sometimes we get so stuck in a moment of despair that we can't see our way out, so that must add a lot of fear to your sadness. I'm glad you told your T. I hope that between the two of you, you can come up with another piece of the plan that involves delay. Maybe a promise that you would call him first and wait for a reply? I don't know. I have the same problem.

I'm just worried and want you to have more than ice cream, but I am so glad it worked.

Hope things look up for you soon. I hate to hear things are so rough, especially so close to the holidays.

Ice cream any time of the day (or night) can be the only thing to keep me going. Sometimes when I have been too depressed to eat it is the only thing I can manage. I love Ben and Jerrys Phish food and Rolo ice cream...mmmmm

*tip* if it is too to get out of the tup, but it in the microwave for 30seconds.

and if you need a real dose of something, put it in a blender with Bailies liquer (I know this is BAD!!)

and I totally agree about having a plan (if you have to) that involves some degree of effort or waiting. Mine has this too. It concentrates the mind on whether it is what you *really* want.

Fallsfall, I love this, that ice cream is your saviour, your comfort, your calmer. I really love it.

My profession is food. That's sounds weird, but I don't know how else to say it, and as I am very specialized, I don't want to say what I do for the sake of anonymity.

But I have very strong feelings about food, about what it can do, and how it can influence us. Those with eating disorders could surely tell me things I never thought about, too. But I think of it as so many things.

But ice cream, well, that just makes sense. Ice cream is sugar and milk. It's mother's comfort. It's cake and ice cream, birthdays. It's dessert, the treat that comes after. It's a hot day's refreshment. It cools a fever.

Recently, I met a woman who organises silent retreats. I told her I would be very interested in cooking at one of these retreats and we talked about the importance of food in the circumstances. This idea thrills me, to cook for people who would be really into the experience of it.

Please take care. I know of no other Ice Cream Queen.

Safety Catch (trigger) » fallsfall

Hi falls,

I'm sorry that you had to go through that. It scared me just thinking about your safety catch being off. Please remember you have friends here at babble.

> (And please, please, please, have one piece of your plan (if you must have a plan) that takes some effort, to prevent impulsively acting on your plan)

The only real safety catch I have is that I would need to mail my diaries to my T before I did anything. There's no way I'd want my husband to read all the terrible stuff I spew out on those pages. But it doesn't really have much of a delay factor in it.

Can I ask what your safety catch is? Please don't answer if it is too personal or too triggering or whatever. I was just trying to think of some things that included a delay factor of a few days but came up with a big fat blank.

Baskin and Robins' Chocolate Mousse Royale is my favourite. But I get really porky eating the stuff :(

Deluxe Cumberland Farms Ice Cream -

Chocolate Lover's Passion

Rich chocolate ice cream with gourmet fudge-filled chocolate hearts and thick ribbons of chocolate.

It doesn't get much more chocolate than that. Plus it comes in 1/2 gallons. So there is lots of it.

The safety catch: It is back on now (it was off from 8:30AM until 12:30PM - not very long, but therapy was at 10, so it was at just the wrong time). I didn't realize how close I would be to that edge without the safety catch - so I'm glad that it is on all except for 4 days a year.

Littleone (and anyone else), I don't mind sharing what it is individually - please babblemail me, or email to babble falls fall - it is a hotmail account. We are not allowed (appropriately) to talk about the details of our plans on the board, and to explain the catch I would have to explain my plan. Let me just say that it is something that I would do to make sure that those I love are less tramatized...

Thank you all for your thoughts. I did see my therapist today, and the danger seems to have passed. He's taking next Monday off, but will be working the rest of the time over the holidays (and I said "I'm very glad to hear that").

I of course an anti- ice cream cause it is made with refined sugar <G> but IF I ate any of the evil stuff....I would most likely eat Breyers...its very natural and well what I recall rather yummy ...Butter Pecan...OR their strawberry..I would think Chocolate would be great but wow seems like those cheap brands would be best Breyers Choc is not good....from of course what I recall..

Have you had your blood sugars checked? Just a thought

This is going to get moved to another board... My Triglycerides were 375 - I got them down to 125!!! By dropping most starches (except the cookies, of course). But I substituted too much cheese and beef and eggs, so now my LDL is bad. OK - trying chicken... My blood sugar is OK...

So I eat good things most of the time, but I allow myself my binges when I *need* them. Somehow, I think my GP wouldn't object to me eating ice cream on Friday... considering what the alternative was.

Your question really made me laugh.

Lol no fair loling...OK the reason I asked on your blood sugars was because I was wondering if PART of the reason it works is because your blood sugars may run LOW and mood can be affected by lows ...thus a sugar boost like ice cream can make it all better I know as I am a diabetic...ohh God the dog just farted on me while I was typing........gak.....
It wasn't to try to take your ice cream away....haha..just concerned that after a stressful session one could dump a lot of insulin thus have a low and well....need ice cream....

While I am typing I will tell you yes chicken and fish not breaded can help with the lipids too :D

Chocolate ice cream to go: milkshakes!

Okay, I had the day from Heck today, trying to dye a comforter cover and then trying to get four measly prints made from a digital camera. At the fourth place (Wal-Mart!) I finally had success. But it was crazy out there. Thank Dog for Steak and Shake, so I could get ice cream to go. Although they messed up my order too! Gaah!

But mmmmm, it really does help.

Glad it's helping you, falls.

Take care,

gg
