Depression - Medication and Meditation

Posted by Johnlund on October 11, 2004, at 4:22:28

I have been on Effexor for about four years. But I have been depressed lately, accompanied by panic attacks, the panic attacks are far worse than the depression. However, the depression and panic episodes have not been as bad as I am sure they would have been had I not been on Effexor. But today I tried some meditation technics that I just did that I saw on TV - like humming and breathing deeply and meditating on my simple body movements like breathing in and out. It seems to releave some of my anxiety and panic. I am a Christian and have always been told that eastern meditation technics were wrong. But I did not feel like I was doing anything wrong, and it seemed to help. What does anyone else think?

We can learn something from almost every culture on earth. I am a christian too, but that doesn't mean that deep breathing exercises and meditation are wrong. Many eastern practices are so useful that they have been adopted by our cultures.

There are a lot of nuts out there that like to make loose tangential connections. God's not going to get mad at you for humming and breathing. Don't the birds humm and breath ??

It's really about where your mind is. You know that.

I think stuff like this can be really helpful. I've been doing yoga for a couple of years and have noticed a different improvement in my moods. When I start getting depressed and go to a yoga class there is a definite lifting of my mood.

I'm not sure why Christians would oppose to this since this is a kind of exercise. There is a spiritual/religious side to this but you don't have to participate in that part of it.
