Has anyone undergone Somatic Experiencing?

Posted by judy1 on April 23, 2004, at 0:07:37

It's based on Peter Levine's work and my therp has just started working with me using those techniques. We're addressing the latest (of many) automobile accidents I have had, why they keep occurring, the physical and emotional symptoms, etc. There's a book called "Crash Course" by Drs. Diane and Laurence Heller that is pretty interesting, but the material is relevant to all trauma.
thanks for any input- judy

Is that like body memories? I have those related to sexual abuse. They are quite scary.

Well yes it's used to treat that type of symptom. I also have body memories (from childhood abuse) that I find too difficult to deal with, so my therp is working with the trauma from car accidents I have. I'm learning the skills to deal with these body memories and hopefully will be able to transfer it to the harder stuff.

Judy, that sounds pretty cool, especially since you can practice in on the lesser of the two types of trauma experiences. I think I saw something about this on a PBS science documentary show on how the brain reacts to trauma. Let us know how it goes.

Hi Noa,
I guess there are 3 responses to trauma- fight, flight or freeze, and if the threat sequence isn't completed then a person becomes symptomatic. I hit all the symptoms myself- anxiety, dissociation, disorientation, fear, hypervigilance, physical pain, easily triggered, etc. When a bird hits a window, it freezes and then gradually it's whole body starts to shake and in essence it discharges arousal and returns to normal. If we are in a car accident and we don't complete the discharge (because the survival energy is so intense it's frightening and also we're uncomfortable with surrendering our conscious control to involuntary sensations) then we develop PTSD. My therp's intent is to complete the discharge of the auto trauma (the many auto traumas), and in doing so I learn how to handle other traumas. The positive is I don't have to relive any events, we focus on a physical feeling (like pain in my back) and work to resolve it. That's as far as I have gotten, it's all very relaxing (as opposed to the trauma work I have done before). I'll keep you updated.
take care, judy
