Bipolar or PMDD?

Posted by Casey P. Thompson on December 23, 2003, at 18:32:12

So a few years back... I was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder. Sometimes I agree with the idea of it.... other moments, I dont. My mother argues its PMDD. I looked at both signs and symptoms, and well.... their both me.

So my doctor gave me a prescription of Lamictal. Which is supposedly used for both severe PMDD and Bipolar Disorder.

So far the medicine isnt doing much, though I just started last week.

So how can you REALLY tell? I have tried to keep up with a calendar-- but I cant even keep up with my meds, let alone a report of my various mood swings.
Its a big deal being diagnosed Bipolar-- it can ruin my life when it comes to getting jobs--- and getting caught with the meds by people...

everyone assumes your automatically suicidal and or schizo when diagnosed with such a disease.

Im def. irrational- passionate- extreme- and hot headed. I cant work- cant go to school- cant be normal for a DAY...

Who am I... what am I?

Im 22 - and feel Ive got a long miserable life ahead of me....

That's strange, I was dx with PMDD way back when. But, I've never heard of the similarities until you brought it up. I'm also dx Bipolar. But, I really don't get too hung up on diagnoses anyway. I'm not exactly sure how long it takes before Lamictal stabilizes in your system, but you are tirating up, correct??? Start low, go slow... There's a minor potential for a fatal rash. My old Pdoc put me on Lamictal abnd didn't tirate up, even though I asked him several times about it. Luckily I didn't get the rash, and later I asked him about it and he was shocked that he started me at a high dose (he was so cute, so I forgive him, and I am seeing a new Pdoc currently)...

Don't put too much weight on the dx. Either way, Lamictal will potentially help you with PMDD or Bipolar Disorder. Just because someone is diagnosed with an illness, doesn't mean that illness defines us as a person. Don't let your illness define you.

Sorry if it's confusing, but there are a number of boards here, and I think this would fit in better at (just plain) Psycho-Babble. Here's a link:

Why? Just wondering, as it wasn't a strictly medication related question. Wouldn't diagnosis, etc. work equally well on either board?

If something's discussed in both places, then it might be harder for people to know where to participate, so I'd like for there to be as little overlap as possible, but it's fine for follow-ups regarding the psychological aspects to be posted here, it shouldn't have been such a blanket redirect...
