EMDR

Posted by Jai on October 24, 2003, at 13:12:39

I just finished a year of EMDR. Has anyone else done it? My life has changed totally and I feel like a new person in so many ways. The underlying tensions I used to carry around within me are gone...funny before the tensions left I really didn't know I had them. I thought that it was common to be so tense. Feed back anyone?

Hi, I did EMDR a few years ago for a molestation/rape at 7. I thought it was a molestation but my therapist at the time said it was a rape!
I liked EMDR, it really helped a lot.
How did you do EMDR? My therapist used her finger and went back and forth in front of my eyes, until I was able to connect and work through what I needed to.
I'm glad it helped for you:-)

At first my therapist did tapping on my knees but this was hard on her physically. so we went to the tones with the earphones, I was worried it wouldn't work but I got used it. I know only a few people who were helped by this method and wondered if there were more people out there.

EMDR worked really well for me, in dealing with a recent mugging, because I had a vivid recollection of the scene. It didn't work so well for childhood stuff, because it was all blurred together, really, like a generic memory rather than a specific event. Getting that triggering memory to "start the tapes rolling" seems to be an important element of success with this method.

For sure, though, exceedingly cathartic. I think I weighed half as much when I walked out after a session, I felt so unburdened.
