Starting September 1, certain benefits will be cancelled, though I can't recall which ones... but as of October 16, Medicaid will no longer cover psychological counseling for those 21 and older! What's more, they won't even cover eyeglasses anymore!! I'm so infuriated by this... thank the gods they still will cover psychiatric services.

Ooops! Sorry Dr. Bob, I didn't read all the way down the list to the redirect. I'll repost my response here.... Sorry...

Ame,

That situation is terrible! I hope my brother, who is on SSDI does not get dinged. He really needs the help. (My whole family, it seems, has mental illnesses.)

>What's more, they won't even cover eyeglasses anymore!! I'm so infuriated by this... thank the gods they still will cover psychiatric services.

Yeah, I can hear the Ol' Boys on the Hill now, "Well, y'all know that them there crazy poor people don't need to see nothin', don't ya?"

Geez, It's enough to make me want to claim political assylum in Canada. I'm Gay, Hebrew Pagan(Jewish), Cherokee, AND I'm mentally ill. If I hear the trains coming I'm outta here!

I can't say for sure, but I didn't give the national Medicaid hotline any information on what state I was in, and I assume they would have told me if CA was exempt from this.

Hey. Never, ever, when dealing with gov't bureaucracies, local, state or federal, ASSUME that the individuals with whom you speak know exactly of what they speak. Double and triple check everything... within reason.

This is brand new info for me, and I'm curious if you've followed up by checking govt' websites, calling, etc. Do you have a letter on paper from your state Medicaid dept?

I'm in Maryland, also have Medicaid as a secondary insurance, and am a tad concerned, altho' at the moment, I'm not using any Medicaid MCO (managed care org.) covered "p-docs" and therapists.

Glad you'll soon be able to vote! :)

A democrat speaks? Health care cutbacks are happening everywhere. I just lost my therapist too after Ietria closed down their Mental Health Division. "Not profitable enough" I'm sorry this happened to you but I've been aware of the problem for 10+ years. Five years ago I lost another therapist in Fort Worth because of another Mental Health Division called Excel closed. Health insurance rates are sky-rocketing. I would blame ambulance-chasing lawyers and sue-happy people more than the president for this. Doctor's and Hospital's having to pay sky high rates for malpractice insurance and passing it along to the consumer. Companies aren't going to be able to provide health insurance coverage for their employees if this continues, not as a paid benefit anyways.

It hit me hard too. Felt like I was the only child of a divorcing couple that no one wanted custody of. My therapist offered to take me on the side with a sliding scale fee. And jeez, I don't want to start all over again with a new therapist. It's all about money.

Look around, ask around. You might be able to find some options.
Good Luck

This is such fantastic news. Im so glad to read that taxpayer money wont be used anymore to pay for sessions with quacks (therapists). On the other hand, medicaid doesnt pay enough for straightforward psychiatric care of patients who have severe forms of mental illness. Thats where the taxpayer priority should be.

Thank God there is hope for the world afterall.

Medication and THERAPY in combination have the best results. In the past 10 years, I had my best year when I had a good therapist, and a psychiatrist. It was paid for by medicare/medi-cal. I now cannot find a therapist because of cutbacks, etc. and haven't been doing so well, and over the past couple of years have been hospitalized much more, which ends up costing MORE, much more, than if they just paid for therapy.

My prescription seems to get worse every year, but I think it may have leveled off finally. Without vision correction, I'm actually well over the limit (20/200) to be considered legally blind -- 20/400.
>

Is that with or without correction. My oldest is 20/400, maybe worse her last time in but corrects to 20/20. I was told that legally blind is when they can't correct you beyond 20/400. Would love to know, without getting lost in an internet hunt.

20/400 is without correction -- with glasses, it's 20/20; contacts, it's 20/15. Actually though, anything over 20/200 that can't be fixed with vision correction is considered legally blind. Anything over 20/800 is considered blind.

I personally find that quite offensive. I have a severe handicap that prevented me (until quite recently) from leaving home, let alone working. Are you saying you would rather I not receive the therapy I need in order to become well? Well enough so that one day I won't have to depend on taxpayers' money for my healthcare, I might add?

Please take the feelings of others into consideration when you post. I felt very dehumanized and saddened by your remarks.

Please don't exaggerate or overgeneralize. The last time you were blocked, it was for 1 week, so this time, it's for 2.
