Increased anxiety on bupropion..

Posted by sac on July 19, 2011, at 6:21:23

I'm trying my third go with bupropion SR due to lack of motivation/apathy, I always have a hard time when I am starting out with this med due to the anxiety is causes. (I'm only taking 50 mgs) I also take 20 mgs. Prozac, 450 mgs. Lithium. My pdoc suggested to up the prozac to 30 mgs to offset the anxiety caused by bupropion. How would this help? Wouldn't an increase in the SSRI add to agitation?

well, agitation yes, especially at first. anxiety, probably not, esp in the long run.

for some short run agitation, a bit of a benzo would be the best thing.

I can't awnser your initial question but I can offer that I tried Busperione twice myself and both times experiences increased anxiety not less anxiety.

FWIW I have a severe sleep disorder called Idiopathic Hypersomnia which like Narcolepsy is caused by something amiss in the CNS and recently linked to low neurohistamine levels in the CNS. The actual implied pathway is low H3 receptor activity. I liked the idea of trying Busperione as it has some H3 antagonist activity but its not H3 selective.

betahistine would be the easiest h3 antagonist available. not having looked into Idiopathic Hypersomnia i would guess it is low histaminergic acitivty. h3 is considered a 'sedative' receptor as it is a autoreceptor for histaminergic neurones.

Bupropion is a crappy drug. It's essentially an extremely weak, dysphoric psychostimulant with active metabolites. I don't know what all of them do, but I know one is an NE uptake blocker.

Increasing the prozac will likely increase the anxiety from the bupropion, not decrease it--you are correct. If you're going to stay on the prozac, just augment it with a real dopamine agonist such as Mirapex or Requip or get Ritalin, Adderall or Dexedrine.
