The very beginning of this Board

Posted by ronaldo on March 26, 2008, at 2:35:16

I would like to read this board right from the very beginning of it, but how do I get there? I don't know how. I think it is a very NB board as neurotransmitters in my understanding are the building blocks of the whole Nervous System.

It would be interesting to see if there was any general explanation of the funcions and mechanisms of N-T's at the introduction of this board. I need such an introduction. Maybe I should just go to Wikipedia.

At the top of the page, click on Archives, then, in the case of this board, on the link next to "08" - January 14 - as there is only this one archive so far. This is a new board started on 1/14/08.

There wasn't.

Wiki would help for sure, and then I had this one bookmarked from way back, from something I needed for some college class, I think:

Hope you find what you need....:-)

Unfortunately, this is a clinical board and not an investigative research board.

Myelin is not a neurotransmitter, and cannot be understood that way. Yet, it is one of the most fundamental of structures that allows for an accelerated rate of message propagation throughout the nervous system. The study of neurotransmitters alone does not cover all that is necessary to understand the brain.

"Neuroscience" would be a logical name for a board devoted to the workings of the CNS and endocrine systems. Such a focus would be broader in scope and offer a better representation of brain function in health and disease.

The name used here is not as important as the choice of posts allowed. Posts are currently divided as monotherapy (only one drug used) on the Medication board and polypharmacy (more than one drug used) on the Neurotransmitter board. I feel that this is an ineffective use of this website because it prevents the organization and concentration of a knowledge base to promote a better understanding of the phenomenology of mental illness through the separation of clinical medicine from investigative research.

There are far better sources of information regarding neurotransmitters than what you will find here, mostly because they are not the main subject of conversation.

I think this is a failed board that should be resurrected as a forum devoted to biological research and how the results of that research might translate into clinical practice.

I definitely agree with those sentiments, unless i'm missing something.
