I slipped the other day and smoked some methamphetamine, and now after three days I still feel absolutely horrid. I cant focus on anything; I feel mentally numb and fuzzy; Im frustrated and want to scream; Ive been tired for the entire time, sleeping most of the day; I feel somewhat physically ill; and Im breaking out in acne. Is this going to get better? I am angry at myself but cant believe the swing from feeling mentally clear and getting back to the gym and now this, all from six hours of some smoking and a day or so without sleep. I cant ever remember feeling so miserable, ever, and Im scared to death.

Hi,
I am sorry you are going through this. Sounds like you are dealing with horrid fear. Are you on regular meds?

I have been sleeping all week. No energy. Cant read. Feel absolutely toxic. I am afraid this is permanent and that I took a good life (or a reasonable one) and threw it away after one night. Ive read horror stories about the permanent damage from meth and now Im scared my life is over. Day five and still feel depressed and unable to focus. Marginally better than before at best. I dont know what to do. I have no hope :(
Im on Celexa and Lamictal at present. Would Abilify help in your experience? Mostly I am just concerned my life and happiness are over forever.

Hi amd,
I am really sorry you are struggling. I have a couple of clients, one a meth user, and the other an ex-user, and they too have struggled. But, the good news, is that they go through peaks and valleys as well. I am also an addict, and go through the same.
Abilify has been shown to have some effectiveness for addictions. Have you tried it? It may be a good option.
Please keep posting. I and others would gladly like to support. You aren't alone, and I have seen some recover from the most difficult of addictions. There IS hope. And hope you feel better.
Best,
Jay

Im largely struggling because I am having such a terrible reaction to one 12-hour stint of smoking methamphetamine and am worried I did permanent damage. Its been six days and I am still feeling tired, fatigued, depressed, and unable to focus. Is this going to fade ever?

Yes, the effects will fade. You are maybe having a bit of withdrawal, but mostly I think it is anxiety. I work around this a lot, and psych meds greatly help. I have seen accountants, professors and all recover. You have to remember you will always be in recovery, just like the rest of us. But you really should seek addiction counseling. You will get the support you need. Do you have access to that? Have you thought about the Abilify?

Hi.
I ended up in a similar situation due to phenylethylamine (PEA; the chocolate amphetamine) abuse, often involving binging and staying up for days on end. It gets better, but it can take a long time, especially without treatment. You may crave stimulants again, especially if it is taking long to recover. I suggest that, if you must take something, you use a less destructive stimulant like methylphenidate (Ritalin) or even cocaine.
