Is there any evidence that Trazodone curbs OCD?

Posted by Lamdage22 on January 19, 2023, at 12:15:11

Can anyone interpret the evidence? From what I can tell, it doesnt help much.

No, not really. It was the 'med from hell' for me, BUT, I LOVED it's sister drug, nefadozone!! The most UNHARSH antidepressant. Marketed as Serzone in N.America. Don't know about it's effect on OCD, but it has calming effects via 5ht2a blockade.

It seems it is actually an *agonist* at the serotonin 5-HT2C receptor:
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9618398/

That would translate to an antidopaminergic effect.

Is that good or bad? There is evidence that Neuroleptics can agitate OCD. I feel they do that with me.

Be aware that priapism is a possible side-effect of trazodone. As attractive as this might be to some males, it is actually a medical emergency.

The other thing worth mention is that a major metabolite of trazodone is 1-PP. It can be a nasty substance that elicits anxiety and other unwanted side effects. Look into it for a comprehensive overview of 1-PP.

My doctor didnt want to prescribe trazodone xr because it comes from abroad. The result is that I only take one 25mg trazodone in the morning. I used to take 25 morning, noon and evening.

I honestly cant be bothered to take pills four times a day as opposed to two times.

I cant tell a difference between 25 mg and 75 mg. Also I hear Trazodone can negatively affect testosterone.

No I didn't know about mint but now that I do I won't consume it anymore.

Do you think I am a fool for not taking the Trazodone 3 times a day? I am now taking 25 instead of 75mg. I just can't be bothered.

Probably, it only applies whole-plant mint, such as in tea. Chocolate flavoured with mint is probably harmless.

Hi.

I don't know about trazodone. I never heard of it being used for OCD. One thing I don't like about trazodone is that it is metabolized into m-Chlorophenylpiperazine (mCPP). Do a search on Google or PubMed about it. The reports regarding mCPP and its making OCD worse are inconsistent, but it would be a concern of mine. mCPP is usually reported to provoke or exacerbate anxiety. It also increases the plasma concentrations of cortisol and prolactin. Elevated prolactin is associated with decreased levels of testosterone. However, cause and effect remains unclear.

mCPP is a serotonin receptor agonist.

Well, I dont miss Trazodone mood wise at all and it is somewhat toxic to the reprofuctive system is what I read.

Maybe I can ditch it some day. I will ask my Doctor.

Is OCD your predominant symptom?

If treating OCD is critical to your quality of life, I suggest trying clomipramine (Anafranil) if you haven't yet. Clomipramine is probably the most effective drug available for OCD. It is a tricyclic with potent serotonin reuptake inhibition. Unfortunately, it is a bit of a "dirty" drug with respect to side effects. They seem to be a combination of tricyclic and SSRI. They suck, but OCD sucks more.
