Is it possible to take bupropion (Wellbutrin) ever

Posted by Franz on August 13, 2022, at 13:24:54

Hi. I find not much difference between Wellbutrin SR and XL.

It gives me more energy but also some anxiety and elevation of blood pressure. Appart from that it has less side effects than SSRIs.

Is it possible to take it every other day to reduce side effects and maintain some stimulation?

Thanks

I mean Wellbutrin every other day (nm)

Can you not lower the dose?

No, the lowest dose for SR and Xl is 150 mg. There is not immediate release. I could cut 150 mg SR in half but it is difficult and will lose the prolonged effect. Maybe I should try it anyway.

With methylpheniate SR, sometimes I just suck on it like a lozenge until the desired effect is achieved.

Alternatively, you can dissolve it (the day before) in a bottle of water, and then drink it throughout the day.

I have cut the XL, like you said, and got the desired effect...a lower feeling of a bit of 'pep'. I think the doses are way too high for this drug.

Or the opposite ;)

If I recall correctly, I tried at most 900 mg of bupropion a day, without any noticeable effect. But of course, people are more or less sensitive to the substance, as with any other.

You are much better off taking 1/2 of a pill each day rather than exposing your brain to a roller coaster ride of Wellbutrin blood levels. I think it is okay to ignore the manufacture's insistence not to cut pills in half.

If you haven't given Wellbutrin treatment sufficient time to sink in, perhaps the side-effects will subside at 1 pill per day given more time. I would try that first. You can also try to cut back to 1/2 pill for a few weeks and then bring the dosage back up to 1 pill per day.

By the way, 300 mg/day of Wellbutrin (SR or XR) is the sweet-spot for most people. A minority of people have to take 450 mg/day.

I think you really should make it your goal to get up to 300 mg/day and give that dosage 4-6 weeks to show its worth.

i used to slit wellbutrin xl, 300mg. I took wellbutrin in high school, almost 20 years ago. I noticed wellbutrin made me a bit more alert, and active to do school work. I was on 300mg and noticed some improvement in alertness and motivatioon, but it has a terrible side effect - anxiety, shakes, irrtiblity. Some people love wellbutrin, saying it makes peppy, it did with me, but later on, the irrtiblity started happening. I didnt tell the doctor to lowwer the dose, so i started cutting 300mg xl in half with a knife, and then even cutting the half into a forth. But i got off it, you can split it, and i was on the XL form, which lasts longer the SR. SR form is shorter, so later in the day, the wellbutrin could wear off and you could have anxiety free period. XL form lasts all day. Trying splitting it in half , then make it a forth, that should reduce the dose to less side effects
