I didn't notice any effect. I remember that it was "crunchy", like chewing granulated sugar. It tasted all right too. I've read that cats need it for the health of their eyes.

Yes, but only sometimes. I have bipolar depression, and taurine calmed my switching. But it was very, very unreliable.
One med I would highly recommend you try is Lyrica (pregablin) which is off-label, used for social anxiety. Similar effect as taurine, but I found also my body seemed to 'get-used' of the taurine easily. Lyrica, from what I understand, mimics GABA and is bioavailable, unlike the GABA you buy in healthfood stores. I found it way, way more effective than gabapentin (Neurontin). You most certainly won't regret trying it! I have been happily on it for over 12 years.

Does tolerance to Lyrica develop? I made good experiences with liposomal GABA. It is deemed to be able to cross the blood brain barrier. My product also has Theanine in it.

Yes, there is a small bit of tolerance with Lyrica, but it still does it's goal of relieving some anxiety, even after many years use. If/when you try it, I think you will wonder why you didn't try it sooner. Should go good with your atypical AP's.

I guess driving would be a problem. Is Lyrica much less addicting than Lorazepam would you say? Could I use it in its place as needed?

Lyrica isn't addictive. You don't 'crave' it, even though you may need it. Millions use it for fibromyalgia, unknown muscle pains, pain in general, brain fog, etc etc. You can use it daily, with no cognitive impairment for driving, operating heavy machinery, etc. I have many friends both in the mental health community, and outside (who have physical impairments) who use Lyrica, and get good efficacy with it. It is particularly good for those who can't tolerate antidepressants. (Many of my friends and relatives on it find it has almost no real side-effects...including myself.) Talk to your doctor...here is just one of many controlled randomized trials showing what I said above...maybe bring this to your doctor.

I always liked the sound of Lyrica. I may bring this up. My doctor is not very patient right now, but seriously, I am not there for his feelings.
