Gabitril and suicidal ideation

Posted by phidippus on December 29, 2019, at 22:06:17

I have been taking Gabitril for anxiety for the past few days. This morning I felt suicidal. Is it just a symptom of my illness or is Gabitril the culprit?

I don't know. Did you take it once before? (I might be incorrect in my recollection.)

We need more data to determine that question. Try repeatedly quitting and resuming the drug and see how it affects you.

I did not wake up suicidal this morning so I'm guessing it was psychological rather than pharmaceutically induced.

i read some funky stuff about gabitril, but it's gaba reuptake inhibitor, good for anxiety and seizures but i read some stuff people had bad experiences, and also the side effects that are listed on most medical websites.

Gosh, it's been a long time since I've seen Gabitril (tiagabine) mentioned. It definitely is unpredictable and can have opposite effects between individuals. It is capable of producing anxiety, irritability, and dysphoria.

How has Trintellix (vortioxetine) affected you? I hope it is helping. I am under the impression that it takes longer for it to work, but is superior to most other antidepressants. My doctor sees more people responding to lower dosages than higher dosages. Interestingly, he said that primary care physicians have had better luck with Trintellix than psychiatrists. He thinks that psychiatrists might be too aggressive in pushing the dosage to 20 mg/day.

I'm taking Gabitril for neuralgia and am hoping it helps with my anxiety. I'm up to 8 mg and so far it seems to be taking the edge off. It is not helping with the neuralgia but I don't think it will until I reach higher doses

Trintellix is the only antidepressant that has ever worked for me and I have been on all of them. Right now I'm at 15 mg and I think that's where I'll keep it.

Ps. How do you edit your signature again?

That's great news. I'm happy that you are finally being rewarded for your persistence.

The past 18 months have been hellish for me. Extremely. I got sick and tired of taking Parnate with only a marginal improvement. It was a rather barren existence, even though I had more mental energy to work with. I have been around in a circle going from Parnate to Trintellix to Effexor - twice. I even tried Nardil again. Trintellix produced some encouraging improvements, but there was no one dosage that provided a stable remission. Perhaps I should have persisted with it. Right now, I am taking Effexor at 300 mg/day. I was up to 450 mg/day for awhile, but I felt weird and became dysphoric. It's been a roller coaster ride - both biologically and emotionally. I'm not too bad today. We'll see about tomorrow. I get hints of improvement here and there, so I haven't given up on it. One aspect of my depression (bipolar) is anhedonia. Parnate doesn't help at all with that. Nardil does, though. For me, I get the impression that Effexor has more potential to improve anhedonia than Parnate.

How long did it take for you to respond to Trintellix?

You should be able to get to the settings from here:

http://www.dr-bob.org/cgi-bin/pb/settings.pl

You can always go to the FAQ page and search for the link for "settings".

I hope you remain well.

I'm sorry to hear the past 18 months have been so rotten for you. I've never had to deal with anhedonia and I never want to...How have you done on TCAs like Clomipramine or Imipramine?

It took me one month two respond to Trintellix at a 10 mg dose.

Did you try anything to potentiate it? I mean especially (a) neurotransmitter precursors and (b) stimulants, or combinations. (a) would be tryptophan, 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), phenylalanine, tyrosine, or L-dopa, ideally with a peripheral decarboxylase inhibitor like carbidopa. (b) would be the usual candidates, methylphenidate or dextroamphetamine, but perhaps modafinil (or armodafinil) could be an alternative, and phenylethylamine (PEA) would be an alternative to ampehtamine.

Have you tried pramipexole (Sifrol or Mirapex)? That was the only anti-anhedonic drug for me.

Do you have apathy, or just anhedonia? Apathy is my main complaint, but for certain I am also interested in relief of anhedonia and cognitive dysfunction. I am not complaining about my mood; I'm not even sure it's depressed.

No-one wants to... What are your principal complaints? I thought anhedonia was pretty much the only symptom common to all depressives.

You are much quieter than you used to be. It's unfortunate that you grew sick and tired of the state you were in. From the outside, it looked much better than now. Can you afford supplements? If you tried all meds, that could be an alternative.

yes, i read horror stories about gabitril, even though you would think it would be a good anxiety med, since it's a GABA reuptake inhibitor, which could be similar to gabapentin, or gabatoids, i've read about mood fluctuations, dysphoria, horribkle side effects in some people.
