EMSAM vs parnate

Posted by Uncouth on August 14, 2016, at 12:28:41

Would like to start a thread to get the boards latest thoughts on EMSAM vs Parnate. Last time I was on EMSAM was 2010 and I remember it being especially activating and a bit speedy, though I was in a different state of mind and on other meds too.

Now my 160mg of Parnate just isn't working, especially for anhedonia and motivation and initiative. I am bored sad dysthymic. Neither strattera nor desipramine adjuncts have nailed it and I am very weight sensitive so abilify and lithium are not options. And I'm also trying to significantly minimize my supplement and med intake.

So what are people's thoughts about EMSAM vs Parnate. If I switched to emsam I'd likely drop strattera and only be taking emsam and memantine as far as psych meds go.

The other option is to add dexedrine on top of parnate and strattera but am afraid of ocd exacerbation and of eventual poop out.

You've tried lamotrigine supplementation? My experience was with emsam, and the speediness you note decreased overtime. I liked it a lot, but I don't know how it compares to parnate which I imagine is more potent than emsam.

Lamotrigine can take like months to reach full effect, at least in my experience. Good luck

Was very stable on Lamotrigine for a long time, but every time retried it, had memory problems at 200mg. Maybe these days 100mg would work OK.

Emsam and memantine sounds great. But i will recommend memantine as monotherapy for ocd and anhedonia.
Maybe with an stimulant add on, but in very very low dosage, like 5-10mg dexedrine on top of 30-40mg memantine.

Memantine is anti-psychotic in it self i must say.

So I am very interested in higher dose vs. lower dose namenda. I have been up to 40mg before, and I think it helped somewhat, but it was hard to say because it was when I was in a severe sleep apnea state (untreated). I've been on Namenda for three years but never more than 28mg XR and was either going to go up on it, or down. We decided to go down and am now on 14mg, as I worry a bit about long term cognitive and memory issues on much higher doses.

But do you have experience when 40mg worked but lower doses didn't?

I am currently taking 37.5mg, but I have taken up to 75mg. It's not bad. If you are really depressed, then it will improve anhedonia to some extent.

However, I find that most S/NRI's don't really hit the spot for me. TCA's are a bit better.

Are you referring to memantine? You took up to 75mg? Can you describe how you feel at 20mg vs 37.5 vs higher? Side effects?

Parnate is defeintly more potent than emsam, they both resembkle amphetamine in structure, actually selegine is levomethampheatmine and levoamphetamine, it's metabolised into them

Parnate .... i've never taken it but it's a good antidepressant but has lots of unpleasant side effects

if you want to try emsam, it would have less side effects, you can eat more selection of food you can't eat on parnate, but it's antidepressant effect may not be as strong, but still give it a try

i've read emsam feels speedy.....mainly due to it part of being levo isomer of amphetamine and methamphetamine after metabolized

No sorry, I have taken efffexor (venlafaxine) up to 75mg. This is a fairly low dose, but I got some cardiac side effects at higher doses. It was ok. It just wasn't terribly effective for anhedonia.
