Prozac (fluoxetine) experiences

Posted by Ruuudy on June 29, 2016, at 14:26:31

I'm a veteran Prozac (fluoxetine) consumer - been taking it since 1990 (26 years).
I think my best therapeutic dosage is 20mg daily. For about the past year, I've been taking 40mg daily. I've had a feeling I might be getting some "Prozac poop-out", so I discussed this & possible augmentation strategies or changes in medications with my doctor.

My pdr & I agreed to bump my fluoxetine dosage up from 40mg to 60mg to see what that would bring.

*** UPDATE: I increased my fluoxetine dosage to 60mg daily taken in the am.
After 2 weeks at the increased dosage, I began to feel the onset of some of the symptoms I originally had occurring when I first began Prozac (fluoxetine) in 1990. I felt the fog beginning to reappear, and my depressive thoughts began to come out of hiding. I just know it wasn't any sign that the increased dosage was beginning to kick in.
It's just so ironic that a medication you take to relieve your symptoms of a certain disease can end up causing a recurrence of said disease!
Should I have toughed it out and continued on the 60mg dose?
I wasn't willing to risk it.
Perhaps the Prozac (fluoxetine) truly has finally pooped out after 26 years.?.
Perhaps I get the optimum benefit of fluoxetine at a very slight dosage.?. (5mg or 10mg daily)

*** Update #2: Since tapering down to 20mg daily a week ago, I am feeling much better.
Still some improvement to be had.

The brain --- such a delicate structure; we'll all be working on understanding it for many, many more years to come!

There is some indication that adding low-dose (300-600mg/day) of lithium to Prozac can help in treatment resistant depression. I obtain an improvement at 300 mg/day when added to Parnate.

Fava et al. conducted a study of people who did not improve adequately to Prozac (fluoxetine) 20 mg/day. It compared the addition of of low-dose lithium to a dosage increase of Prozac to 60 mg/day. The 60 mg/day was superior, but the lithium augmentation was significant.

i'm a 11 year Prozac user, when i started it at 20mg i noticed a slight change in mood, small feeling of contentment, when it was increased i enjoyed the positive mood aspects it gave, but as time went by....my brain stopped feeling the prozac pop feeling, yet it still work but it's not as noticable.....its because the brain adapts to fluoxetine, it still works....yes ... but it's not as noticable as it was when treatment was first started.

I suggest adding provigil, or nuvigil to get a jump start on prozac, i take 80mg and i do notice esome of it's effects but not as much when i first started it

60mg can make you foggy, thats why it treats OCD at 60-80mg.....i would stay with 60mg, i take 80mg for depression and it do notice it helps but sometimes it makes me flat.....i take nuvigil with it to improve the effect
:
there's other options add on's such as : wellbutrin, provigil, Reboxetine, adding abilify or geodon

ask your doctor if there's a add you could do to kick start it's effects
