I only have experience with Trazadone. It will put you to sleep but it causes a "hangover" in the morn. I told my pdoc this and he said me and a thousand other people have told him this.
I hope you hear from someone who has been on both.

ugh. is there a third option? the clinic I go to Rx'd low dose neurontin. Not ideal, but its not as terrible as trazodone.Trimipramine is supposed to be good for sleep. Is that an option?

Have you ever taken Zyprexa? Its an AAP and is the best sleep aid I've ever taken. It just takes a small amount (2.5mg). Works well with an SSRI or by itself for depression as well. I fall right to sleep and wake up refreshed (no hangover as with trazadone).

Seroquel is another one.

Hi.

That's interesting. You are reporting that the weight gain with Zyprexa is dosage-dependent. I wish the same were true with Abilify. Weight gain with Abilify seems to occur equally at all dosages from what I've seen. I could be wrong, though.

See the section "Dosage".
I wish the Abilify were the same for you. I originally was on 10mg Zyprexa and gained 30 pounds. I'd never been overweight before. I weaned off of it and lost all the weight quickly. I'm back on it and have gained all the weight back. VERY frustrating. I'm gonna see if my pdoc will let me go down to 2.5mg.

I have had much success with triazolam 0.25 mg. It's been working consistently for two years now and there's no hangover.
The only downside is that it is a Schedule 4 medication so there are some hassles with refilling the prescription. I can't put it on auto-refill, and can't refill more than 2 days before running out. Also I think I had to use a paper Rx instead of electronic Rx to start.

Careful. I think there should be a replacement for the Zyprexa.

You could try: Saphris, Geodon, Latuda, Rexulti, Vraylar Abilify and/or switch pdocs and get yourself some Metformin.

hey...not to be a Debbie Downer, but I'd try to take 1 AP/AAP at a time, if you can. When you mix them, side effects become more of an issue, plus you have drug-drug interactions to contend with.
I do take 2mgs/risperidone on top of 30mgs/Abilify when I need it (thankfully, that's not very often...), but that's a different situation, because I'm maxed out on Abilify dosage and I sometimes get agitated, so I need a low dose tranquilizer on top of the Abilify.
If you just need low-to-moderate dose AP/AAP, I'd try to pick just one, if you can. I did read that they've done some small studies on antioxidants w/ zyprexa...I saw an abstract for 1 with alpha lipoic acid and another with green tea extract. I don't know how they're supposed to help, but they seem to...at least, the alpha lipoic acid proved helpful.
Good luck!

I've looked at other AP's and AAP's and it seems like they all cause weight gain. In addition I really like Zyprexa aside from the weight gain.
I appreciate your input CE.

Yeah, I would 2nd doxepin over trazodone.
For me, trazodone can work for insomnia that is primarily caused by anxiety, however doxepin (or remeron) are better for initiating / maintaining sleep.
Doxapin is a very strong antihistamine, you can get a decent sleep effect in doses lower than 10mg.
