Anyone on time released lithium?

Has anyone taken any time released lithium products that they can compare to regular lithium?

That's a great question.

For me, regular lithium carbonate 450 mg/day is just on the threshold of producing undesirable mental side effects. At 600 mg/day, I feel pretty yucky. I experience some dysphoria, flat affect, apathy, passivity, slowed thinking, and some other stuff. As best as I can remember, this occurs at a blood level of 0.4 mEq/L. When I switched from lithium carbonate 450 mg/day to lithobid 450 mg/day, I experienced the emergence of the mental side effects. When I returned to lithium carbonate, the side effects disappeared. I have since reduced reduced lithium carbonate to 300 mg/day and retained the antidepressant effect.

One of the side effects I notice (usually between 1-2h after taking 300mg) is that I get some temporary heart rythm changes. I don't think its serious. I had an EKG done with no problems, but it was not taken immediately after dosing.

Its probably some sodium channel thing. I didn't know if 300 mg SR would reduce this.

I could also just open the cap and take half at dinner and half at night (or something).

I take one generic 150 mg capsule twice a day.

I think I already mentioned it, but for some people, there is no optimal dose of Lamictal, despite the appearance of an antdepressant effect at higher dosages. Unfortunately, the cognitive effects first appear at a dosage that is far too low to exert an antidepressant effect, making the drug intolerable. Maybe you need to fine-tune or tweak your dosage. 250 mg/day might be optimal.

I still like asenapine (Saphris) as an augmenter to antidepressants and antipsychotics.
