I think that, most likely, I have bipolar disorder. I feel that I haven't really been honest with my doctor.

What has changed so you feel this is your diagnosis? Phillipa

You might have to treat multiple conditions with multiple drugs. It might also be necessary to combine an antidepressant along with an anti-manic or mood-stabilizer for chronic (as opposed to episodic) bipolar depression.

I'm not sure about how to bring this up with the doctor. I am taking alternatives which do something to stabilize my mood....
I don't want to stop taking them just to try and unleash diagnostic symptoms. At the same time, I feel that the self medication is not quite cutting it.

I don't know what your additional symptoms are, but its always a good idea to bring something this potentially helpful up with your treatment provider(s). For some people, a mood stabilizer of some persuasion can make an amazing difference. I take 2 myself, trileptal and lamictal, and they make my life much, much better.
