Very few state hospitals even exist anymore. Most were closed in the 80s and early 90s.

Seriously? There was one in Goldsboro for NC. I will have to google to see if still there. So what happens to those who have no one and need hospitalization now? Phillipa

They both suck.

You just have to be persistently stark raving mad to be sent to a state hospital without good response to meds, but people at a state hospital will still get discharged ASAP.

I suppose jails are persons these days and augment their functions by donating to those who will not countenance a weakening of the drug laws.

well, now, i think it depends.

when i was in north carolina... they considered me to be local, or a resident of the state. because... i was currently residing in the state. i didn't need to have been currently residing in the state for x amount of time... i just needed to be currently residing. and so i was considered a resident. and so i got in state (local) benefits when it came to health care. and i was on the equivalent of a graduate student living stipend... which put me below the poverty line, apparently, and so i got fairly much free health care from the university teaching hospital.

but that is the state of north carolina. when you live in the vicinity of a teaching hospital.

i did have health insurance (as a condition of my visa)... but... well... i'm not sure that i would have needed it as an inpatient? since i was considered local? i don't actually know. i don't know.

in australia... when i presented to the ER... i purposely went to the private hospital (they have public and private wings, actually) and then they shipped me to the public hospital because they didn't have any beds... and the public hospital kept me in the corridor (somewhat apologetically) overnight because they didn't have any beds either... only to ship me back to the private hospital the next day once they had a bed open up (they said that it would be much much much much much better for me over there).

i think that generally speaking... the quality of a private hospital is thought to be higher. because the people working there get paid more than the people working in public hospitals. that means they are able to work less hours. which means they aren't chronically overworked and underpaid... which means they tend to be more favorably disposed in general. which is really rather important. for quality of care.

in my experience, anyway.

Typically that is what happens. For the chronically ill. And those without insurance. Some have residential treatment in NC for geriatric patients. Homeless and others get evaluated there. Phillipa

Most of the public psychiatric hospitals were closed in the 1980s. Massachusetts has only two still open - one for the criminally insane. When the hospitals were closed, the idea was that patients would be transferred to small-group, community care facilities -- we're not talking about people in acute crisis here, but about people with chronic, disabling mental illnesses like schizophrenia.

Unfortunately, the community care programs were never funded. So patients ended up on the streets or in prisons. According to a series of articles a while back in the NYTimes, American prisons are now the major caretakers for the severely mentally ill in the US.

Acute care is also lacking. Low reimbursement rates have caused many non-profit hospitals to reduce the number of inpatient acute care beds for mental illness. The US also has a number of for-profit acute care psychiatric hospitals. I was in a couple. They are awful. No staff, no groups. I have been hospitalized several times in the Boston area. It is not unusual for patients to wait (under constant observation, since acute care is not covered by insurance unless the patient is in danger) entire weekends in the emergency room due to a lack of beds. There are not nearly enough acute care psychiatric beds in the US.

Chronic care beds -- forget it. They barely exist anymore, unless you consider locking up a homeless schizophrenic in prison to be a chronic care bed.

i live in dallas/fortworth area in texas, i went terrell state hospital because i heard it was amount the imfamous of the mentally ill...i took a trip there, and i was pulled in because i was walking on property and they forced a psych exam on because they thought i was a stranger on state property....they where BULLIES, omgod i sat there and had to say the most correct thing that i was not mentally ill, and get locked up.

The diffrence between terrell and the JPS one i stayed in fort worth, the JPS was much more less prison like, the state hospital looked like a prison of doors and metal and concrete...nothing at all wanting to be in....it's was a psych prison....thats the best way to describe it...

see that was what i was wondering about that, because the state hospitals are vary cold, they look really like psych prison's, metal concrete corridors and rooms...it's scary....treatment there have no idea how they do things....there was alot of empty padded rooms when i was taken in for psych exam

the hopsitals are diffrent because state hopitals are more for long term patients with no hope improvement....the JPS one i stayed at the doctors where ready to help me get discharged, they put me on meds, and observed, and finally i got out....

state hospitals are the things seen in movies...coo coo nest, lots of dark movies of criminals in psych places

If you have insurance they will not put you in a state hospital. They are free. But you won't qualify. Best bet is to stay out of hospital and mind your meds.
