can Risperidone augment antidepressants to battle

Posted by chinaboy on January 1, 2014, at 6:05:46

I always suspect that I have different kinds of mental disorders like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, etc.I'm not sure though. And I couldn't stop from taking various meds to treat the disorders that I suspect I have. I know this is dangerous, but I cannot stop it.
I thought this was OCD but the psychiatrist I went to see yesterday told me that my suspicion comes as a result of schizophrenia instead of OCD. And he prescribed 200mg Zoloft, 3mgRisperidone,and 30mg Buspirone. I felt so uncomfortable with the idea of staying on such a high dose of an antipsychotic, but he reassured me that 3mgRisperidone can help augmentant antidepressants to treat OCD even if my condition is not schizophrenia.
What do you think? Do you guys think Risperidone can augment antidepressants to battle OCD?I tried all the SSRIs and SNRIs (enough dose.enough time),but none of them worked for me, also tried Abilify augmentation,it didn't work either.

How is there a comparison of OCD to schizophrenia? One is an anxiety disorder and the Schizophrenia is different classification? Phillipa

That's a kinda old school combo, but yeah, it can help. In more severe cases of OCD, or cases of OCD where you also have significant agitation, sometimes low-to-moderate doses of antipsychotics are used.

3mgs/Risperidone isn't bad. I was on 4mgs, along with some other stuff, after a full blown psychotic episode. I think they go up to 6 or 8 or something...the max used to be higher, but high doses cause problems, so docs tend to stick lower these days. Progress, right?

Anyway, good luck to you!

is this really schizophrenia?

Excuse my bad English!I'll try to make it sound as clear as possible.
He thinks I'm schizophrenic because i constantly suspect things (like if i have schizophrenia,if i have bipolar depression, etc) and self-medicate with meds that treat the disorders that I suspect I have.So he put me on this old antipsychotic. But I have a question: is this really schizophrenia?

Thank you for your insightful knowledge. Yes, I always suspect that i have different kinds of mental disorders.Thank you for reminding me of the fact that i might have psychosis. It seems that my psychiatrist is correct and I should stay on antipsychotics for some time.

I think suspecting you have some kind of disorder is not psychosis but hypochondria, which is probably a kind of anxiety disorder. Psychosis is when you suspect some external force is harming you, like neighbors talking about you, etc.

REading about mental disorders and then thinking you have those symptoms is hypochondria. Medical students and nursing students and psychology students often go through a phase where this happens -- I get severe headaches, so maybe I have an aneurysm. I feel strange and unreal sometimes, so maybe I am psychotic.

Reading about mental illness and trying to diagnose yourself is not helpful Why does your psychiatrist feel you are psychotic? Do you hear voices, believe people you don't know are thinking about you or persecuting you? Do you experience things that other people tell you are untrue or express ideas that others find bizarre?

These are signs of schizophrenia. Not believing you have a mental illness when you don't.

baseball55,thank you very much~!Yes, you are right! Antipsychotics are not for me,they made me feel confused and angry for no reason.
My psychiatrist stopped all the antipsychotics, and put me on 200mg zoloft,30mgRemeron,and 300mg Wellbutrin.Do you think this is a reasonable combo?

I'm not much on recommending meds. Maybe others will comment. If not, maybe start a new thread. Many people here are meds experts.

This is the end of the thread.
