Belviq/Lorcaserin (Weightloss) Successes?

Posted by PeterMartin on December 16, 2013, at 8:35:52

Hello,

Has anyone here tried Belviq(Lorcaserin) for obesity/weight loss? I've read good things about it online (http://www.drugs.com/comments/lorcaserin/belviq.html) but there hasn't been any real discussion about it here...

Would love info from anyone who has actually given it a trial.

Thanks!!

-P

Yea I think it's an SSRI of sorts. Went on the market in June/July.

Anyone with issues related to pepression or other affective disorders should be warned prior to taking Belviq.

It is an agonist at the 5-HT2c receptor. Although the active drug group in its clinical trials was not higher than placebo in experiencing anxiety and mood issues, it has been very well documented in past research that activating the 5-HT2c receptor can cause a host of issues, including heightened anxiety, dysphoria and depression. At the same time, some individuals who are overweight might have underactive 5-HT2c receptors, so taking the drug might provide some sort of rebalancing to serotonin without overstimualting the receptor. Just make sure you talk with your doc about your psychiatric condition and monitor any side effects closely.
