Not enough salt + swelling?

Posted by Sheilac on November 27, 2013, at 1:57:57

I've heard that you have to consider your salt/sodium intake with Trileptal. None of my stupid docs have any clue about this.

I am wondering, because I hate salt and rarely get enough sodium, if that could be causing me to retain water and swell?

Sounds nuts, but does it? For some reason, Trileptal is causing me to swell, and I love Trileptal. I know it's not because I'm eating too much salt. If anything, I'm drinking too much water.

So why would I be have edema?

Usually swelling is caused by a high sodium level not a a low one even if you are not adding it to your food. Maybe your increased water intake is causing it. Have you had your bloods tested?

Increased thirst can have other causes too like diabetes.

Swelling can also be from venous insufficiency where fluid is not returned to your central circulation and stays in your legs.

I would have my bloods checked as a baseline based on the swelling. Yur docs should have done his already, right?

Is trileptal a salt? HAve to Goggle that.

My doc did all kinds of tests and said I have Raynaud's Syndrome and that painful swelling joints in my feet are a symptom of the disease.

She said if Trileptal is causing some added swelling (which it does), then I'd have to make a decision and be aware of meds in the future that cause swelling.

Foot & ankle swelling is a tiny side effect with Trileptal, but I've tested it a few times and when I'm off Trileptal for about 3-4 days the painful, joint swelling goes away.

I love Trileptal, but I need to walk. My doc suggested upping Geodon and ditch Trileptal.

She also cautioned me that all drugs have side effects.

Ugh! So now I'm supposed to try 120mg of Geodon. Lay off the Trileptal for a month.

Yea, I thought it just meant super cold hands & feet, but in a small population, it can cause swelling and super painful joints in the extremities that swell. That's me, of course!

Oh well.

Trileptal can cause a condition called hyponatremia an electrolyte disturbance in which the sodium ion concentration in the plasma is lower than normal. Many conditions including congestive heart failure, liver failure, kidney failure and pneumonia can have an associated hyponatremia. It can also be caused by overhydration from drinking too much water (polydipsia). Symptoms of hyponatremia include nausea and vomiting, headache, confusion, lethargy, fatigue, loss of appetite, restlessness and irritability, muscle weakness, spasms, or cramps, seizures, and decreased consciousness or coma.

In a recent study 10685 Trileptal users from FDA and social media. Among them, 67 had edema. That's not a very high percentage of folk getting edema from trileptal, which makes me doubt Trileptal is causing your edema.

Eric, I talked to my pdoc last night because I really need and
love my Trileptal.

I only have edema, sometimes at higher doses of Trileptal I get blurry vision. It also takes away my appetite, but I like that!

I never get nauseous, sick, vomiting, etc. I'm irritable without Trileptal!

I asked her if the swelling in my feet could possibly be from Trileptal and she said it was a low possibility and most likely from the Raynaud's Disease (swelling and joint pain in feet).
