Antidepressents:which to take if you have TD???

Posted by lazylizard on November 27, 2013, at 23:24:47

Anyone take a AD and got Tardive Dyskensia but then took another one and it either went away or didnt get worse?? I took Zoloft and it gave me TD and got better but not completely gone. I have to take a antidepressant and now I dont know what to take since all of them potentially cause TD. So I was hoping someone here might have had a similar experience and took another AD but was fine.

I'd take antioxidants and something that could suppress the TD. Low-dose Seroquel xr, amoxapine, symbyax, abilify+ an AD, that kinda thing. Maybe a high-ish dose of trimipramine.

I'm not a doc, just sharing my opinion. Good luck to you.

I didn't know that antidepressants caused TD? Thought it was the antipsychotics? Phillipa

Thats what I thought too and why I was always reluctant to take an AP with an AD. I thought an AD alone was safe, or rather not the cause of AD.

Docs are just too happy or financially indebted to prescribe AP's today for everything they were no meant to be used for.

Phillipa,

I'm still fighting the battle of my life else I wouldnt be here. I do not get a break especially after all I've been through the last few years.

Lexapro almost did me in so it's back to Nardil and whatever else they can offer, "they" being the so called experts who really are unclear on why we get depressed and how to alleviate the most treatment resistent cases. Trial and error until you die with so much of life spent looking for answers when there might be none.

Hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving.

Actually no 11 hours total drive time isn't fun. I forget what the cause of your first depression was? What did Lexapro cause that was so horrible? As taking some of it now. Phillipa

What was the cause of my first depression? That is the million dollar question unless it was the trauma of my sister dying when I was 14 and she was 16. That might have set the ball in motion since I can remember being suicidal and my mother saying everyone felt that way. What did I know then but she obviously was unconcerned or depressed herself.

Lexapro made me suicidal so that was what so many of the AD's do to me.

The tragedy of a child dying would cause a Mother to be depressed also. I'm sorry you felt so alone. And thinking the same trigger in play now? Phillipa

Not sure, but feel very alone since my divorce compiled by a chronic depression that is rarely responsive to treatment.

I can't ever get above it and you know I have been trying for a long time without much success. At times I know that it may never be responsive so why bother trying.

At least your depression seems to be mild and I don't remember you being on the constant med merry go round that so many of us are. I know you've spoken of a few meds but you haven't been in the dark depressive state that so many of us are.

Is that correct since I don't want to assume I understand your depression and treatment course.

SG seems mine is more anxiety driven and physical problems that have no cure. I know you have been battling this for many years. Phillipa

You got Tardive Dyskenesia from an AD? How is that even possible?

Yes!!!!!!! I got TD, dystonia or some weird movement disorder from Zoloft. I have never taken anything other then Zoloft. I took 12mg for two weeks but perviously I took Zoloft for 13 years. I was off Zoloft for a year and needed to get on something again. I have been off it for three months and the facial twitches (eye brows move up and down, nostrils flair, mouth moves up and down like a rabbit movement , hand wiggles and feet curling inward with electrical shock feelings) are getting worse and more frequent. I am at a loss. I was thinking about taking Nefazodone for my panic disorder but so many people say it doesnt work for panic or makes it worse. The doctor wants me to try Celexa but I dont see how that wont make it worse?? I can barely lift my lips up to make a smile because It shakes so much and the most intense nerve sensation!!

Your movements, if repetetive, would seem like dyskenesia. If you are having more infrequent spasms, its more likely to be dystonia. Your mouth movements hint of Tardive Dyskenesia which is often permanent. Treatment strategies include discontinuation of the SSRI; dosage reduction; or the addition of a benzodiazepine, beta-blocker, or anticholinergic agent(artane, cogentin).

Nefazadone is a poor choice for panic disorder as it inhibits the reuptake of norepenephrine significantly. More norepenephrine=greater panic symptoms.

SSRIs are best for panic disorder. I would recommend Viibryd, which has the added benefite of 5ht1a agonism which helps with anxiety.

Eric,
I am off Zoloft now for 3 months. Wouldn't another ssri give me worse TD or movement problems? Have you ever heard of TD from an AD? You seem knowledgable. Is their pain like nerve sensation with TD movements usually?
