How to taper off seroquel?

I am at 300mgs and have been for 2 years. Does anyone know what a good tapering schedule is?

I'd probably taper down 50 every week or two...depending on symptoms and adjust accordingly. Like other meds you have to do it carefully and slow down if side effect are severe...you won't know until you do it.

I would think you could come off in about 2 months...are you doing this under your docs supervision?

Thanks for your feedback. Yes I was at 300mgs and he said to drop it to 150mgs immediately as it shouldn't be a problem as I am all of a sudden getting akathisia on seroquel. It was a problem after 10 days so I went back up to 300mgs.

With most meds, the first reductions tend to be easier than the later reductions ie. as the dose gets lower, you may need to reduce in smaller steps.

For example, 300mg, 250mg, 200mg, 150mg, 125, 100mg, 75mg, 50mg, 25mg, 12.5mg, 12.5mg as needed, stop. The gap between the steps should depend on how you feel. After long-term treatment, it's normally best to reduce over a period of a few months, unless there's an urgent need to stop for some reason. If you've only been on it for a few weeks, more rapid reduction is likely to be possible. Of course, you may need a replacement medication, which can often be started part way through the taper and gradually increased as Seroquel is decreased. Ask you doctor for a selection of different tablet strengths to help you, including plenty of 25mgs.

It also depends whether you need to stop Seroquel or simply reduce the dose down to a tolerable level. Whichever you do, don't rush, listen to what your body is telling you. If you feel worse after the reduction, it's probably because you're reducing too fast.

Take care.

When I wanted to taper my doc gave me samples of the time released. 300-150. But I can't remember how many pills. I think 14 of each. I ran it by my pharmacist and he said that will work. Much easier.

Good point. My suggestion above was for plain Seroquel only, aimed at someone who was having difficulty reducing.

For Seroquel XR, there's a 50mg slow release tablet which could be very useful for tapering or adjustments. Could reduce in steps of 50mg at whatever rate feels comfortable.

I was on plain Seroquel when he gave me time released to taper. Water under the bridge I'm still on it.

You can just stop it, really. Otherwise drop half a dose every week till you're done.

Not so sure about stopping it, really. Thanks everyone for your responses. Hit a big time low after dropping to 150 for 10 days so back up on 300 to get through the holidays and then reassess.
