My 25 yr old son has Schizo affective. 8 months ago he went there because he freaked out when his bike was stolen. He lives alone in his 3rd floor apartment. This time he jumped off the third floor balcony when 11:00 at night someone knocked on his door. He looked thru the peephole and decided that it was the Mafia and they wanted to kill him.
He was taking 15 mg zyprexa and a small dose of Artane. In addition he had lost 25 lbs in taking 3 weeks of Artane and begged us to take him off of it.Now he is back in a care facility and been there 2 weeks. They took him off Artane but kept him on zyprexa increasing the dose to 20 mg a day.
Today they said his psychosis wasn't going away fast enough and added Haldol to his zyprexa. We are worried about the Haldol it might cause TDK or something else bad. What do the members of this forum think about it?

Daniel so sorry to hear this horrible news. I imagine you must be very upset. If artane is to keep away TD there is a substitute forgot the name It sounds like he could be schizophrenic by age and actions. Phillipa

Has he ever been on clozapine? Sometimes Haldol is also used for intractable hiccups? Go figure? Phillipa

My son didn't have any luck with Abilify when he took it for a month back in 2004. If he can sleep at night that usually means he is getting better. Abilify kept him awake at night, gave him hallucinations or at least made them worse. Klonopin didn't help either he got addicted right away and every time he took one he went to sleep (day or night) when he woke up he wanted another klonopin. Anyone have success with Haldol in small doses?

We visited my son today. P.A. ordered 5 mg Haldol each Am and Pm plus 20 mg Zyprexa once a day. The Haldol seems to have improved him, whereas Zyprexa makes him somnolent. He definitely was better, much more alert and responsive.

Daniel that is good to hear so are you pleased with the Haldol. Cogentin was the name of the med I was trying to remember the other day for keeping TD away. Phillipa

Another development at care facility. Haldol brought my son to the positive side, but was still a bit paranoid. They changed the 2nd med from Haldol to Prozac. I visited again yesterday, he is much better. He may even be willing to enter their assisted living program which is a super deal. He has to sign over his SS but he gets to share a room with one other participant, he get 3 squares a day in a great looking cafeteria with a salad bar. He gets classes on adjusting and coping with life and at 1:30 he can take off till supper time. They take day outings and work together a various projects. He was stable for 7 years during which he finished 3 years of high school and got an associates degree from college. Then he tanked almost 2 years ago, this is the best he's been since then.

Is it possible with the new med combo and his education that he may be able to live & work on his own? Phillipa

Hi Philip. Very doubtful, he is not strongly self motivated. While in his apartment he showed no interest in doing his own laundry or cleaning chores. If he goes to work he could lose his SS which he needs. In a way he like living alone but I think it overwhelmed him so he just concentrated on doing what he wanted at the moment. For the last 3 - 4 months he has been talking to himself and gesturing (sometimes wildly). The medication changes he has gotten at the care center has gotten rid of most of that behavior. We hope he will enroll in the program I described, it could be a new beginning for him.

Thanks Philip, yes this opportunity came up unexpectedly but he will still have to agree to it. I think chances are less than 50/50 he will, but we'll see. I will post the continuation when it happens.

Yes ,he is, but there is one factor that might make him more likely to go, the rules are he can leave the program any time because it's strictly unlocked and he is done with daily activities at 1:30 pm and he can go out and not be back till supper time, Seems to me either way he has got nothing to lose.

He desperately needs the program but looks like he will decline this time.
They reduced his before bed Zyprexa to 15 mg tablet added 20 mg of Prozac
in the morning. Has been taking it a week. Marked improvement. We are
hoping he can keep his weight down. Artane knocked his weight from 210+
to 185 a good weight for him. Maybe next time he will take the program.
By the way, beware of Artane it's effects are unpredictable. Ie. weight loss
and paranoia for my son.

Son is back in his apartment, he seems to me making progress on this recipe. 15 mg Zyprexa tablet, 20 mg Prozac capsule and 25 mg Benadryl. I'll post again in 2 weeks for progress.
