I've been fighting substance and alcohol abuse for many years now and lately had been making strides in getting that under control. But last night I fell off the wagon and did something I'd never done before: smoked crystal meth. I'm trying not to panic and to look forward, treating this as a slip but not letting it destroy my progress, but I'm having a major freak-out because of what I know are meth's killer characteristics.
Is it possible that this one time use of that drug could cause permanent neurological damage, or if it stays limited to the one use will my brain recover? I'm still crashing, I believe, and have trouble focusing. I don't know what to do.
Any advice?

You don't need to do anything :)
Don't dwell on what has passed away and what is yet to be.
Just accept that this is something you do and resolve to do it less often.

I seriously doubt it did any permanent damage.I think it indicates you are hanging with the wrong people and they are exposing you to temptation. The thing you can do is not hang out with those people, at least under circumstances where partying can occur. That substance does not drop from the trees, you have to get it from someone, so avoid that someone and you will avoid the substance.

Your brain is OK. It won't be if it keeps happening. I've seen several lives ruined and had three friends die from it. I'm sure you know the dangers and can make a rational decision.

I appreciate the words of support.
This was the first and I hope only time I've ever crossed this line. I always told myself it was one thing I would not do, ever, and yet I found myself last night in a dingy apartment passing around a pipe. I feel like utter hell right now. Is this the come down? I feel weak and blue and shaky -- how long will this last?
On another note this is so humiliating and shameful. I feel like such a failure. I'm trying not to dwell on it, but still, it's terrible.
On top of that I also breathed in some kind of inhalent, and some amyl nitrate. It appears last night was my attempt to destroy my body in one go. :-(
I just hope there are no long-term effects. I'm going to Hazelden next week to try and turn this around.

There is probably no / minimal damage from one use. However.....how you interpret this could result in your likelihood of using it again. Should you come to believe that "just once" is benign, you might be in the wrong mindset.

Is this a new name or older one you plan on using? If so post name change on admin. Don't have to say what previous posting name was. Phillipa
