Vistaril rocks

Posted by ChicagoKat on February 3, 2013, at 19:57:12

My pdoc and I decided to try Vistaril (also known as Atarax) for the anxiety I get with Ritalin. And it really helps!! And as a bonus, it's non-addictive. For anyone who suffers from anxiety and needs to find something to help after everything else gives up the ghost on ya, give Vistaril a try!

The first time I took Vistaril (about a year ago) I went from teetering on the edge of a panic attack to a placid puddle of peace in the space about about 45 minutes. Few things in life bore me more than watching someone play video games, but I was quite content to lie on the couch and quietly watch my brother and his girlfriend play Call of Duty for about six hours. Sadly, it never had the same punch after that first dose. It was helpful for sleep for awhile, but I either built up tolerance or just became immune to it. But I also experienced the same diminishing returns with Trazodone. When I first started taking it, I would drift off to sleep in about 45 minutes and be out cold for at least nine hours and, even then, have to force myself out of bed because i was still so sleepy. Now, I can take 150 mg. and drift off after about an hour before waking up three hours later. What I wouldn't give for the relaxing bliss of that first dose of Vistaril...

Hi Kat! I had a paradoxal reaction to vistaril after a week. But it helped alot when I had panic attacks in the middle of the night. I did have bad next day hangover from it though. But it was great short term. Good luck!

Oh Meatwood, what I would give to be in a placid puddle of peace, that sounds so blissful.

Vistaril doesn't make me sleepy; my anxiety is just too strong to let it make me feel that way.

My biggest worry is that I will build up tolerance to it like I do to pretty much everything else. Reading that you have probably built up tolerance to it worries me. And makes me mad. I *finally* find something that's effective, and it will probably give up on me too. I feel like screaming

I almost didn't post about my experience with it because I didn't want you to worry about it possibly losing effectiveness. And it might not, in your case.

Well, I will hope like you can't believe that I don't become tolerant to it, but I have a bad history of developing tolerance to meds. I'll just hope and hope and hope, b/c with the Vistaril added to my regimen I have been doing SO much better....I almost feel human again. Well, we shall see! Thanks for your post, it was nice of you. :)

Hows it compare to benadryl? Phillipa

Hi Phillipa,

Vistaril/Atarax are very different to Benadryl, both are antihistamines, but Vistaril also has a specific anxiety releiving action based on blocking the 5HT2A receptor, where as Benadryl just makes you drowsy.

In a recent controlled trial in Europe, Vistaril was found to be as effective as bromazepam in GAD

It's much more potent to benadryl. Plus, it crosses the blood brain barrier much better than benadryl does.

I think my anxiety is so strong that even though Vistaril controls it, there is still enough active potential in me to keep me awake and alert.
