I can't shake the feeling that shrinks destroy people and that the drugs, ect, etc. just destroy people. They destroyed me, that's for sure--and at a young age, too. I've been given another chance, and I don't think I should spend it dealing with the profession that has destroyed so many good (but troubled) people.

Mental disease destroys people, too. You gotta choose the lesser of two evils.

Maybe you just need to find a pdoc who fits your personality.
I love my pdoc. I had a lot of problems before, it took about 10 years, but I'm at a point now where I don't even need to see her or take any meds.
I don't think she harmed me. It was good to have her around. I feel like she really cares.
I took meds before but she never pushed them on me. In fact her goal was to get me off meds altogether.
I used to OD and cut and be suicidal, miserable, borderline, etc. I even ended up in the hospital once and in the ER another time, but I'm all good now. I'm actually happy now and never think of killing myself or feel so bad I can't stand it.
Pdoc didn't make me worse, I got better.
Maybe you just need to find the right pdoc.

Your view on taking medication for your condition swings like a pendulum. That is just an observation, not a judgment. Perhaps you should allow some time to pass before making a decision regarding your treatment. You might feel differently about things next week. It seems that every time you attempt to discontinue Abilify, you get yourself into trouble. That is not to say that Abilify is the best drug for you. Perhaps taking a drug like Latuda would produce a more comfortable mental state.

CE What happened between now and last night? Something did. Did you have an appointment with the pdoc? Let me know as you know you definitely need what has made you function. Don't forget you can always write. Phillipa

I agree with Scott, I'd wait a week before committing to and decision CE, forever is a long time.
While drugs have their downside, consider what happend to people like us before the psychopharmacological revolution...... one flew over the cuckoos nest anybody?

I agree that finding the right pdoc helps immensely. I saw different pdocs on and off for years, and it not only made me worse, it wasted a lot of time.
I wouldn't write off psychiatry in general; I would put a lot of effort in finding the right doc for you, and remember that it's only part of the equation in getting well. Meds can be very helpful (and necessary), but they only go so far.
