respiratory infection...so help?

Posted by rjlockhart37 on October 3, 2012, at 12:49:19

i know antibiotics are usally the thing that is used....but it bad...i cough extremly and it hurts tremendous and sometimes i can't get anything up yet i know there's tons of stuff in lungs..i can't smoke because it will worsen and inflame the lungs to a worse state, i smoked this morning and it felt like fire after...i can't smoke for the next couple of days until this thing has took its course.

What's a short term thing to do while this is going on...im going to have to get to my general practice doctor and of course the only thing they will do is antibiotics...put a hot rag or a heating pad to my throut?

anything would be great...

1. Take a simple analgesic such as Advil as directed on the pack, 2 tabs 4 times a day - this will releive the fever, the headache and the pain in the chest

2.Take a cough suppresstan plus expectorant such as Mucinex DM, 2 tabs twice a day. This will relive the cough and help you bring up the muck in your chest

3. Stay warm inside the house, drink plenty of warm drinks, and maybe take some vitamin c

Also, while most respiratory infections are viral and dont requitre antibiotics, check with your doctor just to be sure

I would recommend self-care until you can see your doc, and hopefully that will be soon. Is there an urgent/immediate care facility near you that you could go to? If not as you said, hot rags, heating bottles, lots and lots of water, and lots of rest.

Do NOT take cough medicine that contains Dextromethorphan in it, or says DM on the bottle. I saw that you are on prozac, and taking Dextromethorphan with Prozac can cause serotonin syndrome very easily. Cough medicine that just contains guaifenisin in it is OK, and may or may not help. Drink OJ, take your vitamins, and see a doc for an antibiotic as soon as possible. Be sure to let your doc know which meds you are on.

Hang in there; hope you feel better soon.
Kat
P.S. DON'T smoke while this is going on. As you said it is painful, but it will also just make things worse.

The Advil is a good idea Jono, which I forgot to put in my post. But the cough medicine with the DM in it is not a good idea b/c it could cause serotonin syndrome since he is on Prozac. Just an FYI :)

I didnt think of the seretonin syndrome thing to be honest - codeine would be a better choice as a cough suppresant, but you cant buy that OTC in America can you (we can buy it without prescription here, but the sale has to be under a pharmacists supervision, you cant just put 10 bottles of it into your basket)

yea im still taking dextromorhan because its in the musinex DM....its not causing any reactions with Prozac. I've got serious treatments going on for me...im having soups and taking vitimen C...there's got to be a presciption that increases you immune system...i really am going to ask my doctor about it. So I will be strong against virus and backteria when they do enter....

seriously rj you should NOT be taking the DM in the mucinex while you're on prozac. that's exactly how i ended up in the er with serotonin syndrome one time - i was on prozac and i was taking robitussin DM. it didn't happen right away; it took about 24hrs of taking the DM, but when it hit i have never felt sicker in my life aand i seriously thought i was going to die, and i just might have. so STOP taking it NOW. get some plain guaifenisin...just some plain robitussin, that's all that's in mucinex anyways. so get some PLAIN robitussin that just has guiafenisin and take that. I mean it. You are playing with fire.
