memantine fatigue?

Posted by g_g_g_unit on September 11, 2012, at 21:17:30

I stopped Parnate over 4 weeks ago, and in the two weeks following cessation felt constantly wired, hypervigilant, anxious, etc.

About a week ago, I began taking Memantine, starting with just 2.5mg in the morning, and the moving up to 2.5mg twice a day for the past three days. I'm aware that Memantine has an incredibly long half-life and that I can't make any judgments at this point, but I've been feeling incredibly weak and fatigued, to the point where conducting normal day-to-day activity is quite difficult.

I wasn't sure if this was an extended withdrawal symptom from Parnate, a return of the depression, or somehow linked to the Memantine, but it's frustrating.

Does anyone know of a possible mechanism via which Memantine might induce fatigue? Is this a known side-effect? If so, is it supposed to be transient?

Hmm, it isn't really drowsiness - more like my body is completely sapped of physical energy, but at the same time I might feel mentally alert or kinda wired.

I experience something similar early in my treatment with minocycline. Within a few days, the fatigue converted to an antidepressant response.

I never experienced anything like it while on Memantine.
