How are you finding doctors who will treat you??

Posted by violetdream on June 10, 2012, at 10:59:03

I've seen a lot of posts on here with people with unusual and amazing med combinations and most certainly complex mental health cases.

Yet apparently, I now have gone through so many different kinds of treatment and have such a range of symptoms that doctors are REFUSING to treat me! I saw a doctor earlier this week that I'd been waiting a month to see, I didn't even take into consideration that he wouldn't even do light med management, but basically he became overwhelmed by my history and symptoms and told me that I should be doing something like a 3 month inpatient stay out of state....

I contacted another doctor who got rave reviews and is supposed to be a very good psychopharmacologist - the receptionist was very kind and said that the doctor had never refused a case. Well, once I sent him an email, he didn't *refuse* it, but was saying that I had to commit to a year of treatment with him, which could cost 600+ dollars *per week*. Is this at all normal??

Does the "Dr. House" of psychopharmacology exist? I feel like my options are to find someone to pay to write prescriptions that I tell them to give me (and even there is a limit to that, if I ask for something like opioids etc) or I find an expert, but apparently experts would rather be treating the easier cases. Is there a middle ground? I live in a LARGE metro area, and it seems like no one has any experience with MAOIs except for these experts who refuse to treat me.

I'm not sure what my options are right now because these experts just aren't motivated, if I could somehow get into a case study that would be amazing but I don't know anything about that.

The worst part is that I have severe rejection sensitivity - I was turned down by the HOSPITAL at the ER, and the first doctor I contacted I had to hear third party several weeks later that I "wasn't a good fit".

My heart goes out to you. Docs seem to be getting picky and chosey and dont at least here like to even prescribe meds. Sometimes I wonder if they know things about them we don't? A year of committment if not suicidal or harmful to others how would they even contemplate this? Phillipa

Time for some detective work maybe. Try calling local universities and briefly explain your situation and see if they could recommend anyone. The ideal situation would be to find an MD who has experience with diverse issues. Or have a specialist on the side. It's just that specialists, as you have already seem, work within a narrow frame and that is not what you want.

This sounds really strange to me. I have quite the psych history myself (when I was giving it to the new pdoc, he shook his head, scratched it, and went "whew," audibly), but he didn't refuse me. Nobody has ever refused me, including hospitals. Are you in the US?

I went to the websites of some respectable hospitals (here its Rush and Northwestern), filtered based on specialty, got a preliminary list of names, made a round of calls. After finding out if they could fit me in, whether the schedule and insurance would work, I was down to 4-5. I dropped a couple also because they weren't timely in returning calls and that's an immediate red flag to me. Finally I ended up shopping for a littl while and have settled (provisionally) on the one I've seen for three visits. He seems to have it together, but I'm moving on if my gut tells me to. I've suffered through enough ineffective treatment.

I think if these people are acting like this you would never want them as your pdoc anyway. Keep making calls and trying different avenues. If you're in a big city, you will find someone.

If your case is too complex for them or outside their area of expertise, perhaps they have a colleague, mentor or peer who they think might be able to help you. I would ask them of they would be able to suggest or recommend an alternate provider.

You could also make enquiries at the medical/psych departments of your state's major universities.

there's alot of doctors online...but its messy to get envolved with them. If you have insurance...they will refer you to some...if that's not an option, talk to a social worker...and if they refer you back to the same doctor ask for another one. With this situation, your going to have to make it vary clear that you are suffering and just say you can't function...be vary eleborate and keep a urge to the implication that you are not in good health. That should do it. But if not, post here again...we'll figure out something.
