Does anyone have any thoughts as to whether Remeron or Zoloft have more effects on raising serotonin? I wiki'd both and see that Zoloft does obviously inhibit the reuptake of serotonin but Remeron hits a heck a lot of serotonin receptors. When I look at drug interactions and warnings of serotonin syndrome I see more "contradictions" (warnings about serotonin syndrome) with Remeron than with Zoloft when adding different medications. Zoloft.
Remeron has no effect on increasing serotonin. It may cause increased firing of serotonin in theory, but has not been definitely proven. More than anything else remeron is a potent antihistamine. It also blocks some serotonin receptors. Any or all of these could help someone feel better, someone else feel worse, but I think in the real world versus the laboratory world zoloft has a much stronger record in both the serotonin department and the depression department..

Thanks bleauberry. I don't know why on epocrates.com when I do drug interactions the addition of 5htp to remeron is a contraindication and when I put 5htp with zoloft there is only a moderate caution. Interesting that you say that it blocks some serotonin receptors I didn't know that. Thanks again.

Bleauberry is correct that zoloft is the only one of the two drugs that raises levels of serotonin. However, meta-analyses seem to show Remeron is a slightly more powerful medication.
I don't know that there's any reason to believe that remeron's powerful H1-blocking capability would be antidepressant (though it'll likely make you kind of sleepy...), but the direct action on serotonin receptors (which zoloft largely lacks) is certainly important in that regard.
For what it's worth, it's probably unlikely that 5-HTP supplementation with either of those two will much increase the risk of serotonin syndrome. From everything I've read, 5-HTP supplementation tends not to significantly increase serotonin levels in the CNS, unless it's prescribed with an enzyme inhibitor (as physicians do in the UK).

Thanks for the post. 5htp has been very helpful for my best friend for OCD/depression so I thought I would try a small dose. I thought this was interesting when I was reading about remeron as this link popped up. A top 10 list of ADs!?

Remeron is a potent tretracyclic selective seratonin inhibitor. It is indicated for the treatment of severe depression.
