Ultra-high dose memantine? Anyone?

Posted by uncouth on May 22, 2012, at 11:58:26

Hi does anyone have any experience with ultra-high dose memantine, like over 40mg? I am at 40mg right now but dealing with a lot of other problems including insomnia...but i'm at such a high dose of memantine because i'm hoping it will replace both my prozac and wellbutrin. My doc wants me stopping taking wellbutrin because we think it might be causing my sleep disturbances, since nothing else seems to be working for sleep. I think i may also have adrenal fatigue or cortisol issues, anyway i feel really screwy but am HOPEFUL about the memantine.

I'm just curious if anyone has any experience with it at 40mg and higher. So far i've felt a little dissaosicated the past few weeks but i think it gets better, it does seem to occur after every dose escalation so i have to go really really slow. But i feel profoundly different, it has dramatically helped OCD tendencies and toned down my hypomanic/mixed state thinking. I'm just dead tired, has anyone else experienced extreme fatigue as a result of memantine? IT could also be just because of sleep deprivation, id on't know.

My target is to get up to 50mg for a few weeks, I'm going to try 45mg this week and see if I can tolerate it....please anyone who has any experiences at this high dose of memantine let me know.

I'm also withdrawing from wellbutrin and prozac at the same time so i know it will be hard to tell...ugh i always F with everything all at once i feel so crazy right now! but i just have to figure out this insomnia problem i can't handle it anymore now that i've started working again the pressure is on. i'm so sick of taking all these meds for one thing or another i'm on like 10 medications...gotta reduce!!!

These are the supplements which I am sure have always aggravated insonia for me no matter when in the day I took them......

rhodiola
green tea extract (nothing to do with caffeine)
r alpha lipoic acid
astanxthin (sp?)

I think D3 did too.

Only took memantine once and it did the same, or so I felt.

I wouldn't advise going above 40mg-- 40 is a hefty dose as it is.

I'm glad it's helping you. You may also want to try supplementing it with myo-inositol (aka inositol-- not to be confused with IP6). Although one or two reports on here report mixed results; one reported it working until it was stopped, and then it stopped working. : )

I'm struggling with insomnia, too-- have you tried klonopin? Seroquel? Seroquel will knock you out...

not klonopin, but seroquel isn't working..i get really tired, but cannot seem to initiate sleep without saphris. maybe psychologically dependent at this point id not know.

what is the rationale for combining myo-inositol with namenda???

are you taking it at the same time of day each day? Because you'll get sleepy if you're even an hour off, as you'll lose a steady state in your blood stream, which typically takes about 4 days.

There is also such a thing as diminishing rate of return. It's unlikely 40mg will do much more than 20mg will, besides give you more side effects. Have you tried Aricept? It made my mood go up quite a bit... but I needed to take it with klonopin. because it made me anxious. But that, I think, is a rare side effect. GI side effects are common with Aricept. I had to take Pepto Bismo daily, but that was all.

Inositol, for me, makes me tired when I'm suppose to be tired, but doesn't sedate, I'm not sure anyone knows why. I'm not suggesting it has any synergy to memantine; you can take it alone and it has the same effect. I use 500mg Inositol in the morning and at night.

Interesting. Memantine is really throwing me for a loop. Last monday I went back down to 30mg for two days, then started feeling a little less fatigued, so decided to push it up again, quickly to 40mg, then was feeling ok, so pushed it up again the next two days to 45...i'm really sensitive or the dosing is really weird at this range. I really understand now why you need to stay at a stable dose for a while, even small dose changes really throw me for a loop. I thought i was cool at 45 for like 3 days and wanted to push it up again to 50, but that totally backfired...it really does build up. Now once again I'm back reducing down to 40mg lol. Took 25mg yesterday morning then said to hell with this what am i doing, and am trying to get down to a more stable blood level where I can function. Took 5mg last night. Then this morning was going to take 20mg to stabilize at 40mg total /daily but ended up taking 30mg beucase i figured oh i took too little last night lol.

God i'm crazy, memantine is making me crazier it seems. Tonight I have a sleep study at stanford but will take 10mg at night so i can hit my target of 40mg dose today. Feel like sh*t though and depressed.

I don't know i think maybe i should go back down to 30, i still feel out of it after 6 weeks at this point.

18 grams is very effective for my OCD. Creates good freeways for serotonin to drive on without traffic.
