I Feel Ad's Are A Lot More Addictive Than Benzos

Posted by Phillipa on February 11, 2012, at 11:57:21

I did my own experiement I increase the lexapro from 2.5mg to 5mg for about a week. last night decreased it again to 2.5mg with the 50mg of luvox and now .25mg of xanax & 7.5mg of valium and find I have side effects today. How could this be possible. A simple low dose upped for a week? And I can do this with benzos and feel nothing. I do feel that these meds are strongly addictive. So why the fears of docs and benzos and free prescribing of SSRI's and similar ad's? Phillipa

I don't have any scientific basis for this, but for me I can dose clonazepam between 2-6mg depending on my anxiety, and have no withdrawal symptoms. It's when I get down to appr. 1mg things start to get nasty, so it's like there's a treshold. Maybe it has something to do with receptor occupancy, if it falls below a certain percent you will notice it, i.e. withdrawals.
I don't find it strange though, that you feel side efftects after lowering the SSRI dosage, that's normal.

Tensor an experiment as when moved here 6.5 years ago taking 25mg of luvox and l0mg of valium. Added the lexapro after upping luvox to 50mg and never could lower it the luvox again without no sleep. Now the lexapro is higher so it seems to escalate? Phillipa

Sorry to disagree Phillipa, but the evidence doesnt back you up. Virtualy all heroin addicts also abuse benzodiazepines, almost none would abuse SSRI's

While antidepressant withdrawl might be uncomfortable, benzo withdrawl can kill you.

Also, I've never heard of anybody thinking to them self "damn, I'm having a rough day, I think I need another Zoloft" but thats pretty common in long term benzo users, having another pill just to get them through the day.

AD's can cause wityhdrawl symptoms if stopped cold turkey, in the same way steroids can, but they arnt cnsidered addictive in the traditional sense.

I think antidepressant withdrawal can kill you too. I'm pretty sure people have committed suicide because of the symptoms of SSRI withdrawal.

Seriously for me it's worse. Sounds silly but a few years ago a doc here took me off the low dose luvox 50mg and added high doses of benzos. And I ended up in the ER after two weeks. Didn't sleep couldn't. The docs said go back on the low dose luvox and low dose valium I did and slept that night. How does one explain this as makes no sense to me? Phillipa

Phillipa, slow taper over 2-3 weeks is the answer, from 1 pill to 3/4 of a pill to half a pill to a quater of a pill.
