Depression or Oppression?

Posted by SLS on January 4, 2012, at 23:46:44

Sometimes, the word "depression" doesn't seem adequate to describe the crushing psychic pain that MDD can produce. I find MDD to be more oppressive than depressive.

As one of my doctors once said, it's like roasting your brain over an open spit. A bit graphic, but it conveys the unendurable quality.

Can you explain more what oppressive means to you both? I don't think know what this means in reference to depression. Thanks Phillipa

"Weighing heavily on the senses or spirit. Marked by unjust severity."

1. burdensome, unjustly harsh, or tyrannical: an oppressive king; oppressive laws.

2. causing discomfort by being excessive, intense, elaborate, etc.: oppressive heat.

3. distressing or grievous: oppressive sorrows. "

1. cruel, harsh, or tyrannical

2. heavy, constricting, or depressing

I keep a journal and a couple of years ago when I was severely depressed and hospitalized, I wrote that it felt like my brain was in a vise.

I agree. I feel like I have trouble breathing when I'm depressed. There is such a weight.

From what you have written here over the years, you don't have a serious depression. If you did have it, you would know exactly what they are describing! It sounds like you have much more of a dysthymia/anxiety type of situation.

I think it would be very helpful to work with your new pdoc on knowing exactly what is bothering you, and working out a really good treatment plan with him.

I don't mean this in a critical way, at all, but at times it seems as though you are very worried about having all the difficulties that other posters have. This is probably because your anxiety is so high. Why not make a list of Babble diagnoses and ask your pdoc whether or not you have them also. He will surely say that you don't have MDD, bipolar or psychosis, but will probably say that you do have an anxiety disorder.

Just saying....

Twinleaf you are sooo correct. Want to be my therapist? You know me better than I know myself. What an asset you would be to me. You would and could relieve my fears quickly. You are more than helpful. Thanks for caring and being so observant. Truly a gifted person. Jan/P

Scott:

God, I could not have said that better. Oppression, yes, that is what depression is. I feel like I am being oppressed by a force beyond my control: A nasty, mean-spirited bully that never tires of torturing me. I fight and fight but nothing changes.

scott. the way i feel now. i could not have worded it better.
i feel so helpless for this lost world around me. as well as for myself and where i am at in my useless and unsucessful life.
i am stuck in the forms i have created. i feel so deeply for the loss of those around me.
i want more for my life but have no means to achieve it.
as well as my newly gained intelligence that these new medications have let sprout through. i have created this appearance of an *ss, rather than an eagle that i can be.
so those around me supress my eagle works assuming them to be repeat of others or nonsense.
i try to write but i am so non focused i cant finish any of the stories or poems ive written.
i'm at a loss.
all i want to do now is take something that will once again dull my brain.
i love the knowledge and ideas and relations my brain creates now, but no one else shares that feeling. i am purely alone at this point.
if i can od, just enough to killsome of my brain...well right now that would seem like a blessing.
i'm also tired of feeling the utter pain and suffering of everyone else. i cant seem to even turn on the news these days, for fear of bursting into tears.there is so much tragedy, but selfishly i not only cry for them but the uselessness i feel for myself in being unable to do thing ONE to make any chnages....

B2Chica once a doc told me not to watch the news so I don't nor read the newspaper. I've always felt there should be a newspaper of happy things only. How are you feeling today? Any better? Phillipa

Yeah.. oppressive is much more descriptive. The word 'depression' - for me at least - calls up feeling melancholy, blue, maybe even suppressed. But the kind of depression I have battled is better characterized by your phrase 'crushing psychic pain.' It was all consuming.. and literally life-stopping. It was so oppressive that it hurt to breathe. Being awake was unbearable. And it was unremitting. It didn't 'come and go.' For the duration of the worst part of it, at times it would subside slightly - just enough to allow me to eat something - or take a shower or whatever - but it was just so all-consuming and deeply painful. Physically painful. 'Depression' just doesn't really describe it - because that sounds like something is just pushed down. How I experienced it, was not a pushing down of who I was, but rather an obliteration of who I was. It's only been during the last year that I've felt my 'old self' coming back together, one piece at a time. There are some things pre-depression that I worry have been lost forever, though. I used to have a positive, propelling energy that escapes me now. I remember it, but I haven't been able to recover it. I've also developed a cynicism about life being pleasurable that I think is an obstacle to my recovery, but I don't know how to resolve it. And I think what I miss most of all, is 'faith.' Can't find that either.

I have had times when I felt like I was being buried alive. I'll go with 'depressed' for the worst of my symptoms as in 'pressed beneath the ground' even though 'depressed' has become a bit casually used these days. Oppressed is how I would say I feel about my more dysthymic times and neuroticisms. There is a fair amount terror my depression.

Oppressed or depressed, agreed is the sense of being crushed.
