I have been taking Amitriptyline for 11 night. Started with 5mg.At 5mg the first couple of nights I slept better and was drowsy the next day. I did not sleep as deeply after the first couple of nights. I increased the Amitripyline to 10mg after 6 night and since then I have had insomnia. I have been feeling more anxiety too. With panicy feelings aswell.I am taking this med for anxiety/Depression. I would like to get feed back from others who have used this medicine. I can not tolerate ssri's and am very sensitive to phyc meds, so I use low doses of them. I have tryed most all of them.I recently tryed Clomipramine and nortriptalene but had to stop them do to certain side effects.
Thanks

> ThanksIf you're taking ami for anxiety and depression you're on a very low dose, is there any reason for that? Usual dosing range is between 50-200mg. You must of course consult your pdoc but after almost two weeks you should have reached a target dose of, say, 75-150mg. You can increase with 25mg every three days.
Good luck.

What side effects? Amitriptyline is the strongest TCA and is broken down in the body to nortriptyline, so if you can't tolerate nortrip, chances are you won't tolerate amitrip either. Sorry for being discouraging, what meds have you tried?

Hi,
10 mg of amitriptyline is a very low dose.
You should try 30 mg of this drug.Elavil is a very good sleep aid.
Normal dose for sleep is 30-70 mg.I have been on Elavil for 37 years.
Now I'm on Remeron.Best regards,
Peter Heuer

I can't tollerate nortriptyline but I can tollerate amitriptyline. The reason being is that it is more potent for me at lower doses.
Nortriptyline just doesn't work for me.

Sexual side effects, overstimulation , sweating, insomnia are a few of the side effects. So far,I am tolerating amitrip better than the others. I found clomip to be the strongest.

Amitrip is known for its seditive effect but in some peolple it causes insomnia which it has done to me.I started taking it earliier in the day around 3pm yesterday and I did sleep better last night. I tried Remeron years ago and it was a night-mare for me.
Thanks

It is sometimes very helpful to include in your subject line the name of the person to whom you are replying. There is a special check-box just below the subject line that will automatically add the name of the person whose post you are replying to.
Just a thought...

I think I will stop the low dose I am on.It feels like I am taking Ritalin. I take it early in the day now. I am overstimulated all day and in the later evening the stimulation subsides and I feel better.I think raising the dose would be torture.

TCAs can increase anxiety. However, this may be a hump you just need to get through. Ask your pdoc for some Klonopin.

Doxepin (Sinequan) might be worth looking into.

I tried Doxepin twice. It was nasty.

This is very frustrating.I am taking Klonopin.I think it might be the histimine that stimulates me. I have a sensitivity to it.
