As im a new member in the MAOi-community and my pdoc prescribed some nifepidine i wanted to ask some details. First of all the med i have benn prescribed is called Adalat 5 mg. I think those are capsules. I wanted to ask other MAOi-users how they use this emergency med? My doc told me only to use it when there is no adequate emergency care around. If there is a chance to get high quality emergency attention i should prefer to use it over self treatment.
1. Would you use 5 or 10 mg for treating hypertensive crisis? My pdoc told me to use 5 mg but i read that other use 10 mg!
2. What is a high blood pressure for you?
3. How are the caps ingested when it comes to the case of need?
4. Should one try to reach a normal BP or is it sufficient to reach for example a BP of 150/95? I mean is it essential to reach optimal BP (120/80) by nifedipine treatment?
5. How do you, first of all those who already experienced BP-Crisis, feel a real hypertensive crisis?

I had only 1 Hypertensive crisis while on Nardil and that was in the first 3 months of my treatment. It was caused by a big spoiled piece of chicken that I left on he fridge too much time.
After that mistake I live many years and I could say Nardil caused no problem with my way of eating>

>You need to buy an item to measure your bloodpressure .I dont remember the name in english . That its very important . Then you will know how your body is reacting to the 5mg dose

I realize a little bit late that I was suffering from the crisis so I ended up at the hospital with a 200/150 blood pressure. Not all the doctors here know what a MAOI is , so I suggested him to give me nifedipine . I Leave the hospital after 3 hours when my presurre was at a normal levelBuy yourself that stuff , its very useful . It helped me a lot when I was eating "wrong food" because if I started to feel a little headache , the first thing I used to do was to measure inmediately my BP . Sometimes I had headches but my BP was not more than 150/100 and I just stayed there with and go on with no med.
In fact I never had to use Nifedipine by myself , I never had other HP Crysis nor any accident and I ate most of the "forbidden food"

I have no idea about the actual use of nifedipine, so I can't answer questions 1-4, but on question 5 there is a different thread - also opened by me :D - that deals with the question. Here's the link:

Fortunately, I didn't even come close to a hypertensive crisis, so I can't share any own experiences, but I found some of answers in that thread really helpful.
