Trileptal/Emsam contraindicated?

Posted by floatingbridge on September 30, 2011, at 22:07:45

That's what the insert says. Is this true in practice?

My doc had put trileptal on the short list.

Has anyone here used trileptil while on an maoi?

Actually, I think he mentioned topamax

He might have said trileptil at some point. It's difficult for me to keep track. But topamax was what he was really talking about the last time around.

Sorry. Never mind.

No worries. No plans. Just reading the handout that came from the pharmacy. Was very surprised.

I am not aware of any pharmacokinetic or pharmacodynamic interactions occurring between a MAOI and Trileptal. However, Trileptal has a tricyclic structure. This is often used as the rationale for a contraindication. Trileptal may have a tricyclic structure, but it does not possess the monoamine reuptake blockade properties of TCA.

Without having more information to work with, I would conclude that you can mix Emsam with Trileptal without sequelae.

Wait for more feedback.

Hmm, I cant imagine why. Topamax is cleared by the kidneys and I dont think it conflicts with MAOI in any way. Might be wrong..
I took it for awhile and it was helpful in some ways. I had a lot of side effects however. Took it with SSRIs and TCAs.
