Parnate and Doxepin --) weight gain

Posted by Ben on September 26, 2011, at 3:05:19

I take 80 mg of Parnate and 50 mg of Doxepin. ith the Parnate I had no weight gain but since I added Doxepin my weight has gone up. I read that MAOIs and TCAs potentiate weight gain. Whats your experience?

I can almost guarantee that if you combine Parnate with desipramine, you will lose weight.

The weight gain is related to the antihistaminic/sedative activity of there TCA's, doxepin has extremely high antihistaminic activity, so lots of weight gain, desipramine has almost none, so little weight gain (but it wont help you sleep though)

desipramine is all NE reuptake. Doesnt really work on much else.
I got a little tachycardia and heartburn on it, but it was pretty good on energy and depression.
I really dont think weight gain is common on that, despite what the PI sheet says.
You might get a little physical anxiety on it, thats about the only real downside.

Do you think Doxepin causes weight gain at doses from 10 to 25mg/d. I would like to take it at bedtime to sleep. I read that MAOis does potentiate the weight gain of TCAs.

I think the relationship is additive rather than synergistic. I don't think it is a true potentiation of effect.

If you need something for sleep, what alternatives has your doctor presented you with?

Benzodiazepines, Zolpidem CR, Zopiclon etc. The problem is that Doxepin helps my depression and for my nervousness.

Nortriptyline might be just as effective as an antidepressant. Anxiety very is often co-morbid with depression. In these cases, the anxiety subsides as the depression dissipates. Weight gain with nortriptyline is, at most, moderate. For me, it doesn't seem to contribute to my increases in body weight. Abilify and Nardil did that. When I discontinued nortriptyline for awhile as an experiment, there was no reduction in weight.

Desipramine is an alternative, but it might exacerbate anxiety and insomnia a bit at first. It should not produce any weight gain.

Thanks a lot. I am on Abilfy too. Desipramine isn't available where I life. Isn't Nortyptilin activating? Concerning the Abilify I think I got more anxious and have more tremor as from the lithium alone. Whats your experience?
