my nardil succes

Posted by ronald reagan on April 11, 2011, at 8:29:20

let me first say i have been a regular reader of this site since about '02" it has been very helpfull and educational . i am a male 32 years old, i have been on just about every antidepresent since 13 years old double the max dose etc. . i have mdd with schizoid traits. i started nardil about 2 months ago "my first maoi" at 15mg, i am now at 60mg. i am now noticing a big difference i could actually function, i lost about 20 years of my life from this dabilitating illness, i am finally starting to stabalize thanks to this medication. i just thought i would post my experience from this to try to help others going through this. and by the way i have no side effects except it takes a while to ejaculate wich is a good thing.

lol. Good to read a success story for once. However I would point out that for me, Nardil's S/E profile kept changing (S/E's appearing, disappearing, getting stronger/weaker) even after being on it for 9 months.

Side Effect profile. i.e. the collection of effects you experience excluding the intended effects. So my SE's are / have included :
- gain 35lb
- getting up 7 times a night to pee
- violent spontaneous shaking fits when asleep
- sleep apnea
- light sensitivity
- low blood pressure leading to dizziness, stumbles, feeling like I'm going to faint
- insomnia
- falling asleep during the day
- and so on.

Some have gone, some have worsened, some arrived only after several months.

What dose were you on during the 9 months when you had difficulty with the side effects? Did you stay on the same dose for a long time or switch? And if you switched could you tell improvements of side effects at lower doses, while also maintaining therapeutic levels of medicine? How well did the Nardil help with your original symptoms?

Thanks,
Landon

> What dose were you on during the 9 months when you had difficulty with the side effects?

- I first increased dose to 75mg gradually and achieved good results but was still having lots of very bad days (at this point I didn't know that my main Dx is OCD, not depression and my IBS was also very bad). About a month or two later I requested I go up to 90mg on the basis that it might help and that my body weight had also increased so much (there is a rule of thumb that you should aim for (Weight in lb / 2) mg per day of Nardil).

> Did you stay on the same dose for a long time or switch?
- I've since stayed at 90mg, probably for over a year now.

> And if you switched could you tell improvements of side effects at lower doses, while also maintaining therapeutic levels of medicine?

- to be honest I have trouble detecting dosage changes a lot of the time due to the IBS, which has such a complete effect over my daily health. Recently I've toyed with the idea of dropping to 75mg but every time I get a fresh reminder of just how horrible depression can feel, I then just don't want to rock the boat and change anything.

- overall pretty well. It helps take the edge off of anxiety and blunts or prevents heavy depressed self-talk. I believe it helped considerably to ameliorate the IBS pain too. Nothing else has even slightly helped me.
Cheers,
Pete
