Lexapro - Weight gain / inability to lose weight?

Posted by displaced9 on April 12, 2011, at 6:15:17

Hi All,

I am taking Wellbutrin SR 450mg daily along w/ Lexapro 10mg daily. I have been struggling to lose some weight that I gained while on Seroquel about 6 months ago. I am going to the gym 4-5x/week along with personal training and group personal training, and watching my diet, limiting simple carbs, etc. However, It is very difficult for me to lose weight (more so fat, not that concerned about pounds.) With all of this (plus the high dosage of wellbutrin) I would expect that the fat would come off easier but it's not. And, I was sick for a week and couldn't go to the gym, and gained back a couple pounds. So, if I go off the "plan" for even just a few days I'm right back to where I was. Could the Lexapro be the cause of this inability to lose weight (or rather , difficulty losing weight?) The Pdoc said Lex "could" do it, but didn't want to change it because we had changed meds a lot in the past 6-8 months.

Thanks for your input.

P.S. - I also take a whole food multivitamin for Men, High EPA/DHA FIsh Oil and a Vitamin D3 supplement daily.

I guess it can as also taking low dose lexapro and seem to have some more weight. You seem to have a good combo if able to do all that so is it working? Philllipa

Hi,

It seems to be working Ok although I still have a day here an there with depression and or anxiety

I thought the WB would help counteract any weight gain.

Higher doses of Lex tend to give me more sexual side effects.

I've lost about 60 pounds on the weight watchers program. I don't attend meetings I just track my points on their web site. If you are trying to lose more than two pounds per week that could be why you are having a lot of trouble. I eat pretty healthy and splurge a couple times a week, but even then sometimes I might gain half a pound.

Don't starve yourself too much or your body might cling to it's fat stores. Apparently over dieting can confuse the body like that. Are you really heavy. What is your BMI? It was easy for me because i was 110 pounds over weight. My body wants to get down to it's equilibrium and I had so much excess to burn. It melted right off.

If you want to better your chances of losing weight, you may have to make drastic lifestyle/diet changes, that would improve your life for the rest of your life anyway. Check out these websites.

Hi,

I am 5'11, and 181lbs. I think my BMI is just above 25. Not terrible, but I want to lose the "belly fat" and get lean. I did WW before and lost about 60 lbs, but I just want to do that again. I am following the same practices, just not tracking points, etc. I am doing strength training + cardio, so I know that my "pounds" won't go as fast due to the added muscle, but my belly will come and go.

My appetite is not "abnormal" I guess.. I like to eat and always have, even when I was thin. But, I limit myself.

I definitely don't starve myself and also splurge a little bit once or twice a week. (Nothing too crazy.)

Thanks!
