Recall of Generic Citalopram, Finasteride
Labels of Generic Antidepressant, Prostate Drug Switched
By Daniel J. DeNoon
WebMD Health NewsReviewed by Louise Chang, MDMarch 28, 2011 -- Pfizer subsidiary Greenstone LLC has recalled some of its generic citalopram antidepressant and its generic prostate drug finasteride because of a label switch.

The recall includes citalopram 10-milligram tablets in a 100-count bottle and finasteride 5-milligram tablets in a 90-count bottle. Both of the recalled medicines carry the lot number FI0510058-A on the label.

Citalopram is an antidepressant. Finasteride is used to treat the enlarged prostate condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH.

Women who are pregnant, or who may become pregnant, should not take or handle finasteride. The drug can cause abnormal genital development in male fetuses.

Citalopram can pose a danger to people taking the class of antidepressants called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Citalopram may also be dangerous for people taking pimozide, an antipsychotic drug used to reduce verbal or motor tics.

People who have taken either of the recalled medications should contact their doctor immediately. Patients taking citalopram should immediately get replacement medication, as halting treatment abruptly could lead to discontinuation symptoms or worsening of depression.

Greenstone says the recall "is due to the possibility that incorrect labels have been placed on the bottles by a third-party manufacturer."

Lexapro is Escitalopram.... There is no generic of Lexapro available as of yet... Recall involves CELEXA.

Just to correct...

~~~ I'm on Lexapro not Celexa ... ???
Claim it's generic?
~~~ Celexa is available in generic forms. Lexapro is not as of yet....

I still don't really know what your questions are asking but I thought I would give it another try....

Celexa is much less expensive if you get the generic. Other than that, I don't know of any advantages.

When Lexapro (escitalopram) finally gets generic competition, Celexa may eventually disappear. Then again, Forest continues to sell name-brand Celexa, at higher prices than Lexapro (drugstore.com). Some people may continue to swear by Celexa even though Forest says Lexapro is better.

In my heart of hearts, I doubt that the difference is much more than marketing. But I still hope to try Lexapro once it finally goes generic.

Once took celexa when new. It made me so tired couldn't function hit a mail box with car. Lexapro doesn't do that. But medicaire makes you substitute celexa for lexapro. Still got doc samples though running out. Read it's like a hand on a glove but reverse the hand for other med. Phillipa

Celexa is actually two drugs, S-citalopram and R-citalopram. They are mirror images of each other. Lexapro is only S-citalopram. At one time, I guess it was hard to synthesize just the isomer you want, which is why both got left in. If R-citalopram had been dangerous, it would have been eliminated from the start, but apparently it only causes mild side effects. With a lot of drugs that come in pairs (enantiomers), the inactive isomer is not worth removing. I just came across a drug, Xyzal, that is the active enantiomer of Zyrtec. Obviously that one didn't make much of a splash.

Have done both..found Lexapro to be more effective for my symptoms. I understand not all have found that true or agree.

Main reason for posting was I thought the subject line and first comments were confusing as Citalopram, as it is generally recognized, is NOT the generic name for Lexapro. Therefore, Lexapro users not effected by this recall. Recall was for a generic form of Celexa made by Greenstone. That was the only reason for my posting....

But much appreciated. Seriously had the names mixed up due to fact medicaire for some reasons considers them the same? Thanks Phillipa

You are welcome.

My Rx plan considers all generic SSRI's interchangeable and some other classes of AD's as well, as SUBSTITUTES unless documentation of failure or intolerance on the drugs they wish for substitution. I don't think they consider the drugs the SAME as chemical make up is different.....They just want a lower cost med used if possible.

Thus far, I have been successful in getting coverage but it's the same paperwork hoops every single year... Same documentation ... Maddening and does not make sense to me.

Yes my google search compared them to gloves. One fits one way the other the other way if this makes sense? Before changed medicaire RX plans my pdoc got the cost lowered for me but now no idea still two boxes of samples left. I know celexa does nothing for me. Off subject write please med question for you about Son. Thanks Phillipa

~~~ Lexapro (Escitalopram) is the single isomer responsible for the serotonin reuptake inhibition produced by the racemic antidepressant Citalopram. So, parent/child drugs relationshipwise, so to speak.... one sprung from the first. I find the actions different as far as effectiveness for my particular symptoms. I would have no problem using Celexa (Citalopram) IF as effective for me but simply isn't.
Even with coverage, which I am thankful to get, Lex is still quite pricey out of pocket compared to any generic. Rx plans DO NOT like to pay on brand name drugs, generally speaking.... at least, I know of none that do. My experience is they will attempt to make it as difficult as possible... My Father's Medicare Rx plan will allow for coverage of step drugs but again, paperwork to do and followup on. Thankfully, only one med he takes requires that additional work.
My bmail now on and email addy is the same.
