Tegretol for bp

Posted by markwell on March 8, 2011, at 19:13:38

I went to my doctor today and because I can't take anti psychotics my doctor wants to put me on tegretol for bipolar. Depression is dominant with me but he wont give me an anti depressant without a mood stabilizer. Anyone have any experiences with tegretol? I have terrible racing thoughts and insomnia. Does Tegretol help with either of these?

I would think tegretol would be good for both racing thoughts and insomnia. Probably a better first choice than an antidepressant.

Tegretol is one option. Depakote and lithium are also major choices in bipolar disorder.

I'm really concerned about side effects. I've heard of memory problems and drunken like feeling. I can deal with some side effects if it slows my racing mind and helps with sleep.

Side effects such as that are dose-related. Sustained release formulations of Tegretol tend to be better tolerated, but the initial dose should still be low.
