How much are you going to take?
I just take a small dose of 0.75mg. I feel normal on it. I don't notice anything bad really. I think it helps my anxiety. Sometimes it makes me sleepy.

I took 3 mg for about 6 months after being hospitalized for a terrible mixed episode. This drug saved my life. Had they not used it to make me sleep and slow my thought processes I would have harmed myself. That being said, I did gain a substantial amount of weight which I am just now addressing 5 years later. My doc is helping me taper. Now that he has me off of my ssri we have been able to cut the dispersal down to .5 mg. So i am much less sedated.
It may be a long road for you when it comes to taper down, but this drug is very helpful in that it will induce sleep. I will sometimes take an extra 1 mg at bed if I'm feeling to racey. My doc says an extra dose for sleep can help reset me if I can have the insight to catch my mania before it strikes.
If you have any questions I will try and check this thread for the next few days. Good luck!
Peace

I was put on 4mgs/day w/ depakote following a manic episode. It didn't really help me sleep and I switched over to Abilify b/c of EPS (although the depakote seemed to make the EPS worse, so it may not have been just the risperdal).
Watch out for: diabetes, weight gain, prolactin level increases, EPS, tardive dyskinesia. 3mgs is sufficient to treat psychosis.

Thanks for the reply. My doctor put me on 3 mg for auditory hallucinations, OCD and extreme paranoia.
I was reading an article that said Risperdal and Ap's make Social anxiety worse? Is this true?

hey. I've read that high doses of antipsychotics--atypical or conventional--can cause anxiety and social withdrawal. I think its related to a sort of frontal lobe syndrome induced by high dose antipsychotics, not sure though.
Good luck.

I was on risperdal for a month for panic attacks with auditory hallucinations. Within hours, I felt calm and okay. I loved the way it made me feel. Not high or euphoric, but just okay. I almost never felt just okay in my whole life. Unfortunately, during that one month I gained 12 pounds. Didn't eat more or exercise less, just started gaining weight uncontrollably. Not everyone has this experience with AAPs, but for me they work well and cause rapid weight gain.

It's supposed to be effective for psychosis and bipolar and OCD. But the weight gain is inevitable and it can flatten your emotions, like most APs. I took 2-4mg for social phobia and depression, unsuccessfully. It made me fall asleep very easily and I noticed the physical anxiety symptoms were less. I'm not sure if it helped my SP - sometimes I felt better and sometimes not. It gave me orthostatic hypotension so sometimes I felt more anxious that I would suddenly pass out. But I can't say it made me less social. It's a good drug for the right conditions, but it does significantly increase the risk for diabetes and TD.
