Since I suffer from social anxiety I have always had an interest in Nardil, supposedly the "gold standard" for SA. It sounds like it has severe weight gain and sexual side effects for many people though.
I was reading about it and apparently it raises the levels of dopamine as well as serotonin. This confused me, since I was also just reading about Vilazodone (with great hope) and it is supposed to not have sexual side effects, because its effect on the 5-HT1a autoreceptor somehow causes dopamine release. Similarly, Wellbutrin is often used to help with ssri sexual side effects because of its dopamine raising effect. I have often read that sexual disfunction caused by ssri's is due to their tendancy to suppress dopamine.
If Nardil raises dopamine levels and not just serotonin, why does it still have sexual side effects?

I would guess it has something to do with one of the types of serotonin receptors it has an effect on. It's not a particularly selective drug unfortunately.

Nardil is potently serotonergic. You cannot reverse the sexual side effects just by increasing another neurotransmitter.

Wellbutrin's effect on the sexual side effects of SSRIs is unreliable. Also, the mechanism of action of Wellbutrin is not clear. It is a very weak dopamine re-uptake inhibitor, and so this may not be relevent to its efficacy.

Thanks. I am intrigued by the upcoming Vilazodone, and the claims it has no sexual side effects because of its interaction with the 5-HT1a autoreceptor, which somehow is supposed to increase dopamine activity elsewhere.
I have started a new thread about Vilazondone vs Nefazodone since it seems they both claim (well, in Serzone's case I know it's true from personal experience) to have no sexual side effects due to their interaction at a particular serotonin receptor - puzzling, because it is not the same receptor for each drug.

Serzone is a much weaker serotonin reuptake inhibitor compared with the SSRIs, which is possibly why its sexual side effects are far less.
Vilazodone certainly sounds interesting. It will be interesting to hear how it affects sexual function in the real world.
